Port of Tallinn signs the purchasing agreement for icebreaker 'MSV Botnica'. The 50 million euro agreement is with the Finnish shipping company Arctia for the outright purchase of the icebreaking vessel. MSV Botnica is a multipurpose icebreaker built in 1998 by Aker Finnyards in Rauma, Finland. Her ice class is ICE-10, length (LOA) is 97.3 and beam 24.3 metres. The maximum speed of MSV Botnica is 16.5 knots in open water; she can maintain a speed of 8 knots in ice up to 80cm thickness.

General Dynamics NASSCO delivers 'USNS Cesar Chavez' (T-AKE 14) to the U.S. Navy. USNS Cesar Chavez is the fourteenth and final ship of the T-AKE class of dry cargo-ammunition ships built by General Dynamics NASSCO for the U.S. Navy. NASSCO began constructing the 689-foot-long ship in October 2010, incorporating international marine technologies and commercial ship-design features, to minimize operating costs over its projected 40-year service life.

Adm. Mark Ferguson, Vice Chief of Naval Operations, offered a revealing look at the future of the Navy if budget cuts are approved. The admiral gave the keynote address at the recent opening of the ONR (Office of Naval Research) Naval S&T (science and technology) Partnership Conference and ASNE Expo. Speaking to a capacity crowd as keynote speaker, Ferguson said the Navy is already working hard to do more across the globe-with less resources.

Port of San Diego's Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal proposes shore-to-ship power provision (subject to project's public approval). The project would allow vessels such as container ships and refrigerated cargo ships to "plug in" and use electrical power from San Diego Gas & Electric , rather than run off their own diesel engines while at berth. The Port has accordingly prepared a Draft Mitigated Negative Declaration for the shore power project, per the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
