Hapag-Lloyd Chooses Nigeria, Ghana Partners GAC

Leading global liner shipping company Hapag-Lloyd has signed an agreement with the GAC Group to handle their vessels calling at ports in Nigeria and Ghana. Under the deal, GAC will act as full liner agents for Hapag-Lloyd, actively selling its liner services in the region, as well as providing a range of shipping agency and complementary services for its fleet. The deal comes as part of Hapag-Lloyd’s strategy to develop and expand its presence in sub-Sahara Africa.

Jumbo Shipping has confirmed the order for a second new K-class vessel, with an option on a third, to complement its existing fleet. After careful consideration and engineering study, Jumbo has decided to upgrade the lifting capacity of the vessels from 1,300 to 1,500mt, enabling tandem lifts of 3,000mt. These vessels will comfortably surpass the capability of other vessels in their class and reassert Jumbo's leading market position.

London P&I Club issues warning on manhole gasket and bilge pump shortcomings. THE London P&I Club has reported a growing incidence of shortcomings with regard to the condition of manhole cover gaskets on board ships. James A. Watson IV, Director of the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE). Interior Secretary Ken Salazar Named Rear Admiral James A. Watson IV as New Director of the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) in November of 2011. BSEE was one of the two agencies to succeed the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE) on Oct. 1, 2011. Admiral Watson began as BSEE Director on December 1, 2011, and will succeed Michael R. Bromwich.

Shanghai ceremony celebrates signing of contract with CMD. At a recent ceremony in China, CMD (CSSC-MES Diesel Co., Ltd.) held the official signing of the contract to construct the first Chinese-built MAN B&W design Green Series 7G80ME-C9.2 engine. Due for delivery in June 2013, the engine is bound for a 319,000-dwt, ABS class VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier) to be built by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (SWS) for Maran Tankers of Greece.
LLMC Increases – ICS Supports IMO Agreement

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), which represents all sectors and trades and over 80% of the global shipping industry, and leads shipowner representation at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Legal Committee, has expressed strong support for the agreement reached by IMO this week to increase the limits of liability under the Limitation of Liability for Maritime Claims Convention 1996 (LLMC), by 51%.

International oil service group Aker Solutions is preparing for major growth by investing NOK 500 million (USD 87 million) in its subsea business. This investment is set to double the capacity of its manufacturing plants in Tranby, Norway, and Port Klang, Malaysia. In addition, a new service base will also be established in Malaysia. The subsea segment of the oil and gas industry is growing rapidly and is expected to develop exponentially over the next few years.
