Fishing Vessel Major Refit Completed by Jensen

US-based Jensen Maritime, completes a major redesign of the Global Sea-managed fishing vessel 'Bering Defender'. The project, which improved the vessel’s efficiency and hold capacity, outfitted it for pollock fishing in the challenging waters of Alaska’s Bering Sea. The refurbished fishing boat, formerly named Dona Martita, recently arrived in Seattle after departing the East Coast and transiting the Panama Canal.

New British Warship Sails For Trials

'Duncan', the RN's sixth new Type 45 destroyer, puts to sea for trials attended by Royal Navy, Ministry of Defence & BAE Systems personnel. The yet to be commissioned Duncan quickly set about testing her speed and manoeuvrability, soon after leaving the BAE Systems' Scotstoun, Glasgow, shipyard. The trials will see the 7,500-tonne destroyer taken to over 30 knots (56km/h) and turning very tight figures-of-eight.

Storm Rips Off Part of 'Rena' Fore Section

Earlier this week rough weather damaged the bow of the container ship stranded in New Zealand waters off Tauranga. High wind and rough seas early this week resulted in approximately 25m of the fore section, weighing around 250 tonnes, being ripped free from the aft portside and falling to the sea bed. This section included the boat landing platform and access ladder, with gas cutting equipment also going overboard.

New Oil Spill Response Equipment

The new SECurus system uses infrared cameras and radar to allow oil slicks to be monitored and collected. The new system makes it easier to see and remove the oil both during the day and at night, which is particularly important in the far north where there is little daylight in the winter months. The new system is operated from a vessel, and utilises both an infra-red camera and a newly developed radar system to monitor and collect information about the oil-spill.

The ship managers REEDEREI NSB report that the transfer is proceeding without any exceptional events. GL launches “GL EmissionManager” - Hamburg Süd is partner in a pilot project. At SMM 2012 classification society Germanischer Lloyd announced the launch of a new product, “GL EmissionManager”, which will allow owners and operators to collect, track and calculate the emissions of a ship in detail for the first time.
