The U.S. lags behind Europe in the development of offshore wind (OSW) projects in part due to the lack of a mandatory national renewable energy standard and other tax incentives. But, the Obama Administration has set its own voluntary goal of producing 80% of the nation’s electricity from clean sources by 2035. Following trials, the new 23.9m Damen Fire Fighting/Police Patrol vessel 'Bremen 1' has been handed over to its new owner the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. It will be used jointly by Police and Fire departments in Bremen, Germany, so it has been painted in two colours red and blue. Under emergency call out the vessel can reach speeds of 40 km/hr with its triple Caterpillar engines driving triple UltraJet High Thrust Waterjets via ZF500 gearboxes.
ABS Elects Tony Nassif as Executive Vice President
In response to its continued global expansion, leading international classification society ABS has strengthened its executive leadership team with the election of Tony Nassif as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the society. The election was made by the ABS Board of Directors at its meeting this week. Nassif moves to ABS from his position as President and CEO of the society’s wholly owned affiliate, ABS Group of Companies Inc.

New Practices Will Lead to Safer Passage in Arctic Waters
Highlighting the need for safer navigation in Canada’s Arctic, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) released its report into the August 2010 grounding of the cruise ship, Clipper Adventurer in Coronation Gulf, Nunavut (M10H0006). "Our investigation determined there were problems with the vessel’s voyage planning but we also found that key safety information was not being proactively provided to vessels transiting the Arctic,” said TSB Investigator-in-Charge, Eric Asselin.

Semi-submersible Towed from Egypt to Rotterdam by Fairmount Tug
Fairmount Marine’s tug Fairmount Expedition has delivered the semi- submersible drilling rig Scarabeo 6 safely in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, for her dry-dock period at shipyard Keppel-Verolme. The 27 year old Scarabeo 6, owned by Italian offshore company Saipem, was towed from offshore Abu Qir, Egypt, towards Rotterdam over a distance of 3,290 miles. The tow was executed by Fairmount Expedition together with tug Normand Neptun at an average speed of 5.7 knots.
