Captain Jack Davies is the consummate boatman. Davies wears a number of “hats” in the marine industry, and often he is aboard one of the tugs with which he has some ownership involvement. He can be found twisting wrenches in the engine room, working on deck, or in command on the bridge. Lately he has been overseeing the construction of his latest tug. The new McIlwain-designed Azimuthing Stern Drive (ASD) tug will be 64.75-feet in length, with a 27-foot beam.

A new vessel being built at Japanese shipyard Naikai Zosen Corporation for shipowner Nissho Shipping Co., Ltd. became the first vessel to receive approval from the Panama Maritime Authority (PMA) in accordance with part 7.3.2.2 of the IMSBC code governing carriage of cargoes which may liquefy on 17 October.

Vessel operating costs are expected to rise by 3.8% in 2011 and by 3.7% in 2012, with lube expenditure and crew costs identified as the categories most likely to produce the highest levels of increase, according to a new survey by international accountant and shipping consultant Moore Stephens. The survey is based on responses from key players in the international shipping industry, predominantly ship owners and managers in Europe and Asia.
