On Friday, July 23, First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama christened the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Stratton, a vessel that was detail designed and production engineered by Northrop Grumman using ShipConstructor CAD/CAM software. Stratton is the first Coast Guard patrol cutter to be named after a woman in more than 20 years. The ship is named in honor of Dorothy Constance Stratton, the first female commissioned officer in Coast Guard history.

MV Suez Hijacked in the Gulf of Aden
In the early hours of 2 August, the MV Suez reported being under small arms fire from a pirate attack and minutes later she reported pirates on board. After notification of the attack, attempts were made to make contact with the MV Suez but to no avail. MV Suez was travelling in the Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC) when attacked. Immediately after the first report a helicopter was directed to the ship but pirates had already taken over the command of the vessel.

Statoil Starts Up Morvin Subsea Field
Statoil commenced production of oil from the Morvin subsea field towards the Åsgard field in the Norwegian Sea Sunday, 1 August. “The field is strategically important for further development and operation of activities in the Norwegian Sea,” said Ivar Aasheim, head of the Operations North cluster in Statoil. Located 20 kilometres west of the Åsgard B platform on the Halten Bank, Morvin is a subsea development with two templates and four production wells.

USCG Estimates 10-12 Days to Stop Barataria Bay Spill
According to a report from Reuters, the U.S. Coast Guard estimated it will take 10 to 12 days to seal a ruptured wellhead spewing oil and natural gas into Barataria Bay along Louisiana's south coast. The wellhead was ruptured early July 27 when a barge collided with it. An oil slick covering six square miles had spread from the wellhead by Wednesday. (Source: Reuters)
