VT Halter Wins Navy Deal

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

November 1, 2018

VT Halter Marine, Inc. announced the award for detailed design and construction (DD&C) for two Firm and up to four Optional Auxiliary Personnel Lighter Small APL-67 Class berthing barges by the U. S. Department of the Navy. These vessels were awarded to VT Halter Marine September 17th, 2018 in response to the Limited Competition Solicitation N00024-17-R-2230.

Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) has awarded both APL-67 and APL-68 to VT Halter Marine with deliveries for the vessels anticipated for the second and third calendar quarter of 2020, respectively. Should the Navy exercise all of the options to purchase the remaining four vessels (i.e.: APL Vessels 69-72) with associated supplies and services, the contract award would be in excess of $244 million. The options could be exercised for delivery during fiscal years 2019 to 2022.

U.S. Navy APL(S) Barracks Craft (Berthing Barge) are used by the Navy to house crewmembers when ships are under repair or modification. The Navy’s APL(S) are mobile and can be towed to new bases or shipyards to support changing fleet requirements and also offer potential use for humanitarian missions and other temporary assignments.

The new vessels will be 82 meters long x 20.95 meters wide x 2.2 meters draft.  Each vessel will be fitted with mixed gender berthing spaces for 74 officers and 537 enlisted personnel, for a total of 611 people. Additionally, the vessels will be capable of seating 228 enlisted personnel and 56 officers for each meal. Suitably sized food storage, preparation, and serving facilities are also included. Each vessel is equipped with offices, classrooms, washrooms, laundry facilities, medical treatment areas, a barber shop, and a fitness center.
