Alion Canada was awarded a $1.3 million contract to assist the Ministry of Transportation in Ontario, Canada, in securing a replacement ferry for the Motor Vessel (MV) Pelee Islander. First launched in 1960, the current Pelee Islander runs from Pelee Island, Ontario north to Kingsville and Learnington, and south to Sandusky, Ohio.

Alion Canada will serve as the Ministry’s “owner’s expert” and provide naval architecture, marine engineering and vessel construction expertise during vessel design and construction. Under the contract, Alion Canada will provide technical oversight from design through delivery of the replacement ferry. Two ferries currently operate on the island: The Pelee Islander is the older one and carries 196 passengers and 14 vehicles. A second, larger ferry is the MV Jiimaan, which was constructed in 1992.

“Alion’s experienced team of designers and engineers will help deliver a safe, efficient vessel that meets all requirements on time and within budget,” said Vice Adm. Scott Fry (USN, Ret.), Alion Sector Senior Vice President and manager of the company’s Engineering and Integration Solutions Sector. “We look forward to working with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation in support of all of its goals for the ferry system.”

Alion Canada was established in early 2009 to develop a complete ship design capability in Canada. Alion Canada is a subsidiary of Alion Science and Technology. The subsidiary is supported by Alion’s global naval architecture and marine engineering resources and is made up of approximately 1,200 professionals dedicated to providing engineering and management services to the maritime markets, including all phases of combat vessel and research vessel design, engineering and acquisition.
