"Intuitive Weld Management" and "Innovative methods for leveraging a 3D model" are two of the white papers that representatives from CAD/CAM developer SSI will present this week at the 17th International Conference on Computer Applications in Shipbuilding (ICCAS) in Bremen, Germany.
According to SSI, the papers showcase innovative techniques and implementations of cutting edge software technology with real-world applicability for addressing challenges in today's shipbuilding industry.
Intuitive Weld Management: Leveraging 3D Models

Tracking and managing welds through all stages of shipbuilding is usually a disconnected, inefficient, laborious and error-prone process. The solution to this weakness is to immerse the weld management process within a 3D Product Data Model environment with underlying software that is associative and that has an open architecture. There are three key benefits to doing this: enhanced quality and efficiency; leverage of existing knowledge; and improved communication options. The first benefit, enhanced quality and efficiency, is based on having a single source of truth that is associative. This is because a single source of truth with associative linkages makes accessing, utilizing and modifying weld information more efficient and accurate. The second benefit, leveraging existing knowledge, relates to the open architecture because that allows an organization to leverage familiar tools. Finally, open architecture also allows interactivity with other applications to provide new options for data-rich, intuitive visualizations of complex information.
Innovative Methods for Leveraging a 3D Product Model

By utilizing a 3D product model as a single source of truth, both for subsequent design phases but also for interdepartmental communication, organizations can reduce errors and cost by maintaining information. The information preserved is not only the obvious geometric and attribute data, but also the design intent that is incrementally built into the product model. If neutral formats and platformization are used, a company can further derive the benefits of becoming what is known as a Model Based Enterprise. This paper will show the advantages gained by various companies that have utilized this approach by harnessing the Marine Information Model from SSI's ShipConstructor software which sits on top of the popular Autodesk platform.
