The Siemens-Schottel Propulsor Consortium (SSRP) was granted approval for the new SSP marine propulsion. After more than two years of development, Det Norske Veritas was responsible for technical acceptance of the propulsion system for worldwide service.
The propulsor, which is a so-called "pod type" propulsion system that offers both technological and economic advantages via an electronic motor housed in a pod or nacelle suspended beneath the hull of a vessel - providing direct drive to a propeller. The unit outputs a power of 7 MW, corresponding to 9,510-hp.
