North American Ferries: Faster, Greener & Safer

A Time to Build & Refit
The aging Pacific Northwest fishing fleet is either undergoing or about to undergo a long-overdo upgrade, judging by a major economic report commissioned by the Port of Seattle. Fisheries managers, seafood suppliers, yards and the supply chain all hope an accompanying surge in ship finance “lifts all boats”. For now, the newbuild count is growing apace, slowed just a bit by owners opting for major retrofits amid rich fish harvests.

Oversupplied Japanese LNG Players to Sell off Excess Volumes
Asian spot LNG prices extended losses this week as oversupplied Japanese utilities sought to offload cargoes and as key European gas benchmarks softened. Asian prices for LNG delivery in March fell 25 cents to about $7.75 per million British thermal units (mmBtu), traders said, ranging from $8/mmBtu to about $7.60/mmBtu. Prices tailed off even more sharply into April, currently trading at around the $7/mmBtu mark, they said.

As Canada’s largest port, Vancouver B.C has always been big on shipping. Now they have their sights set on becoming a world-class maritime center. “There’s no problem selling Vancouver,” says Kaity Arsoniadis-Stein, Executive Director of the Vancouver International Maritime Center (VIMC), the organization heading up the expansion initiative. She points out that despite the current slump in shipping, experts are pegging global growth to resume and gain momentum toward 2030.
Georgia Ports See Double-digit Growth in December
The Georgia Ports Authority marked 12.3 percent container volume growth in December, moving 292,172 twenty-foot equivalent container units, an increase of 32,099 TEUs compared to December 2015, a record for the GPA. Roll-on/Roll-off cargo mirrored that growth, with a 12.3 percent increase (7,000 units) in passenger vehicles and heavy equipment handled at Colonel's Island terminal in Brunswick and Ocean Terminal in Savannah. Georgia's deepwater ports moved 63,967 Ro/Ro units last month.
