GE signed an agreement with Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) to help improve the capabilities of the shipping engineering community in China by providing laboratory facilities and cooperating on research and innovation projects. SMU is a multidisciplinary university that encompasses such areas as engineering, management, economics, law, liberal arts and science, with a special emphasis on shipping technology, economics and management.

ABS hosted its Annual Meeting in New York on April 23, 2013. ABS Chairman, Robert D. In 2012, the ABS-classed fleet reached 193.5 million gross tons, a growth rate of more than 4% year-on-year. ABS also maintained its leading position in the global orderbook with 21% of all vessels on order designated for ABS class. With nearly 70% of all vessels aged ten years or less, ABS has one of the youngest fleets showing a strong foundation for a successful future of the organization.

Quijano visited South Korea to hold discussions with the vehicle carrier market segment and obtain feedback on the future toll structure being developed by the ACP that will go in effect upon completion of the Canal Expansion Program. Canal officials met with the Korea Shipowners’ Association, Hanjin Shipping and STX Pan Ocean, Ltd.

IMA has just completed an in-depth analysis of the floating production sector. The study profiles the deepwater industry, examines the dynamics driving the sector and forecasts orders for floating production systems between 2013 and 2017. ABS Grants AIP for Small LNG Carrier Design

ABS granted engineering company GTT approval in principle (AIP) for a 32,000 m capacity LNG carrier design. "While a few membrane LNG carriers in the 20,000 m capacity range were built in the 1990s, this is the first new design to be introduced since that time," said ABS Vice President, LNG, Patrick Janssens. The reason for this innovation, Janssens says, is the development of new markets that have led to a keen interest in smaller LNG carrier designs.

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) announced it has developed a high performance Hyundai Membrane LNG Cargo Containment System. The shipbuilding giant’s new membrane type containment system for liquefied natural gas received Design Approval from classification societies including ABS and DNV. The containment system, useable for LNG carriers, LNG FPSO, LNG fueled vessel and LNG bunkering systems, features dual metal barrier and high performance insulation systems.
