Fjord Wins Nor-Shipping Environmental Award

Rolls-Royce congratulated the Norwegian Ship Owner and Ferry operator Fjord Line on the environmental efficiency award presented to the two passenger ferries Stavangerfjord and Bergensfjord during the Nor-Shipping exhibition in Oslo. The two ferries will be the first international service passenger ferries in the world to run on pure LNG engines. Both vessels are equipped with LNG based power and propulsion systems delivered by Rolls-Royce.

Rolls-Royce, Baleària to Partner in LNG Conversion Project

Rolls-Royce Plc signed a memorandum of understanding with Spanish shipping company Baleària to design gas-powered propulsion systems for three of the companyâs high-speed ferries, which currently run on diesel. Baleària, which operates ferry services between the Spanish mainland and the Balearic Islands in the Strait of Gibraltar and The Bahamas Islands, is proposing the conversion of three ferries from diesel to liquefied natural gas (LNG).
NLI, WTS Win DNV Approval for LNG Tank Design

NLI Solutions and Wilhelmsen Technical Solutions have received Approval in Principle from DNV on a jointly developed LNG Fuel Tank solution based on the NLI LNG tank design. Oslo, 4th of June 2013. Wilhelmsen Technical Solutions (WTS) and offshore oil and gas engineering specialist NLI Solutions (NLI) have received Approval in Principal (AiP) from the Norwegian class society Det Norske Veritas (DNV) on their jointly-developed LNG fuel tank design.
LNG 'Pea Pod' Carrier Order for MHI

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to build a 7th pea-pod superstructure shape "Sayaendo" LNG carrier for a "K" Line/INPEX subsidiary joint venture. Sayaendo series ships feature a unique structure that integrates the LNG tank cover with the ship hull, resulting in significantly improved fuel consumption and maintainability. The order was placed with MHI by Ocean Breeze LNG Transport, Ltd. (OBLT), a joint venture between Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. ("K" Line) and a subsidiary of INPEX.
Harvey Gulf Options for Sixth TY Offshore Dual Fuel Vessel

TY Offshore announced that Harvey Gulf International Marine has ordered the construction of an additional TY Offshore built 302â x 64â Dual Fuel Offshore Supply Vessel, bringing its total order to six. The order, and subsequent delivery, positions Harvey Gulf as the largest owner/operator of clean burning LNG Offshore Support Vessels in the world. TY Offshore is building all six vessels at their Gulfport, Mississippi shipyard.
EBDG Grows Team in Seattle

Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG) recently welcomed two new hires and two summer interns to the Seattle office. Zach McKinney and Jeremy Rice are the latest Marine Engineers to join the firm. McKinney, who holds a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Washington, Seattle, has expertise with a number of vessel types including barges, ferries, military and fishing vessels and workboats. He is also versed in detail design and specialty projects.
Incat LNG Fast Ferry Begins Trials

Incat's dual fuel fast ferry has commenced sea trials in Hobart Tasmania. The 99-meter vessel's twin LNG tanks were loaded with LNG for the first time last week. Testing of the gas system went underway with the GE LM2500 gas turbine engines being run on gas for the first time on May 27 at the wharf and at sea on May 30. The gas trials are scheduled to continue. Lopez Mena (Incat hull 069) was sea trialed with ballast for a 1âŚ

Island Crown is the latest vessel to come from the relationship between Island Offshore and Rolls-Royce. Once again the UT 776 CD has been selected as the basis for a vessel to meet some special offshore requirements. Over the past few years, the Norwegian shipowner has added several batches of the UT 776 platform supply vessel to its fleet, including two fuelled with LNG. This time around, the design brief was a vessel that will usually spend its time connected to an offshore platformâŚ
APT Contracts NASSCO to Build Four Tankers

American Shipbuilder General Dynamics NASSCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics, announced that it has entered into a contract with an affiliate of American Petroleum Tankers (APT), a company majority owned by funds managed by Blackstone on behalf of its investors, for the design and construction of four 50,000 deadweight ton LNG-conversion-ready product carriers with a 330,000 barrel cargo capacity. The contract includes options to build four additional ships.
Rolls-Royce LNG Environship Delivered to Eidsvaag

LNG as marine fuel takes another step forward as Eidsvaag AS took delivery of the first vessel of the Rolls-Royce prize winning Environship range this week, featuring a combination of Rolls-Royce design and technologies which reduce CO2 emissions by up to 40 percent compared to similar diesel powered vessels. Once in operation the vessel will operate a demanding schedule with a weekly round voyage along the Norwegian coast delivering feed pellets to fish farms regardless of weather conditions.
LNG Carrier Contracts ABB for $40 million

ABB contracted to provide energy-efficient and environmental friendly solution for four LNG vessels to be built in Korea. Total orders in the first quarter of 2013 landed by ABB, worth close to $40 million, came from three gas transportation industry players and are for the supply of power and electric propulsion equipment for LNG vessels to be built in South Korea. ABB will supply its propulsion plant to work in combination with a duel fuel diesel engine plant on board a 155âŚ

Washington State Ferries (WSF) is exploring an option to use liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a source of fuel for the Issaquah Class ferries. LNG is used worldwide and provides an opportunity to reduce fuel costs, and better the environment by decreasing emissions. Fuel is WSF's fastest growing operating expense; it burns more than 17 million gallons each year. Its fuel budget is over 30 percent of the FY11-13 operating budget, compared to 12 percent in FY00-01.
