The Marseille Fos port authority has set out a vision for growth over the four years to 2018 in a strategic plan that puts developments costing $560 million at the heart of measures to offer clients a dynamic Euro-Mediterranean logistics and industrial cluster. The developments - including new projects and those already in the pipeline – target areas of activity with the greatest potential for strong growth and gaining market share.
Wärtsilä to Power LNG-fuelled RoPax Ferry

A new passenger ferry being built for Swedish operator Rederi AB Gotland will be fuelled by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and will feature a Wärtsilä integrated solution. The Wärtsilä integrated solution includes a complete LNG powered propulsion- and fuel storage and supply system, as well as comprehensive project services.This will be the first Swedish flagged LNG powered passenger vessel and the first LNG fuelled high speed RoPax ferry in the world.

U.S.-flag Great Lakes vessel operators plan to spend $75 million this winter to ready the fleet for the 2015 shipping season, the Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA) reported. Wärtsilä has been given full notice to proceed (NTP) from Manga LNG Oy for the supply of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal in Tornio, Northern Finland. Wärtsilä will commence construction on the site near the port of Tornio in January 2015. Manga LNG Oy is a joint venture of Outokumpu Group, Svenskt Stål AB (SSAB), Skangass and EPV Energy Ltd. Wärtsilä initially announced this project in January 2014.

General Dynamics NASSCO started construction of another ship in its commercial shipbuilding backlog, starting construction of a second “ECO” tanker to be built for American Petroleum Tankers at a steel cutting ceremony in its San Diego shipyard. U.S. Rep. Scott Peters signaled the beginning of construction by pressing a button to cut the first piece of steel. NASSCO began construction on the first tanker in September 2014.

MAN Diesel & Turbo received an order for four MAN B&W 5G70ME-GI engines in connection with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co.,Ltd. (DSME) agreeing a deal with the BW Group to build two LNG carriers. The technical engine specification complies with IMO Tier II, with options to include remedies for Tier III compliance at a later stage. The 173,400 cu. m. vessels are scheduled for delivery in late 2017/early 2018 and will be built at DSME’s Okpo shipyard in Geoje, Korea.

Gavin Higgins has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of Ice Floe LLC dba Nichols Brothers Boat Builders (NBBB), the company announced today. Effective immediately, Higgins replaces Matt Nichols, one of the company’s founders who has served as CEO of NBBB since February 2012, also serving as CEO for more than 35 years prior to the company’s sale in 2008. Nichols will remain with the company as its Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing, and as a member of the board of directors.

Russia’s largest shipping company is continuing to develop its potential in the LNG transportation segment by entering into a new long-term agreement with Royal Dutch Shell. On December 16, a naming ceremony was held for the LNG carrier SCF Melampus, the third tanker in a series of state-of-the-art vessels to be built under a partnership agreement between Sovcomflot and the shipyard STX Offshore & Shipbuilding.

Braemar Engineering, the marine and LNG technical consultancy arm of the Braemar Shipping Services PLC group, has been appointed as Owner’s Engineers by Texas LNG Brownsville LLC (Texas LNG) for the proposed Brownsville LNG project. The project will be constructed in a deepwater frontage site along the Port of Brownsville shipping channel, South Texas, and is anticipated to export more than 2 million metric tons per annum (MTPA) of LNG, with the first shipments planned for export in 2019.
