Ferry Fixation: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
![King County Water Taxi](https://images.marinelink.com/images/maritime/w200h200c/king-county-water-taxi-38217.jpg)
It all adds up to the global effort to strengthen bottom lines, safety margins and the collective environmental footprint. The future for ferries seems to be on fire; both in good ways and bad. The good is always a good place to start. And, that’s because it is ferry fabrication time. The most notable ferry routes in America are jumping into the construction queue for new vessels and soon the next generation of ferry vessels will be hitting the piers (not literally of course).

![Joan M. Bondareff](https://images.marinelink.com/images/maritime/w200h200c/joan-m-bondareff-37937.jpg)
The use of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as a transportation fuel for ships, barges and ferries has surged in recent months. This surge is due, in large part, to the boon in the production of natural gas in the U.S.; new low sulfur rules for the North American Emission Control Area (ECA), which go into effect on January 1, 2015; and new technologies for the construction of engines capable of running on LNG. Regulatory regimes both in the U.S.
