Since the implementation of Emission Control Areas (ECAs) on January 1, 2015, ships entering waters in the Baltic Sea; the North Sea; the North American ECA, including most of the U.S. and Canadian coast, as well as the French overseas collectivities of St. Pierre and Miquelon; and the U.S. Caribbean ECA, including Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands Sea had to use fuels with up to 0.1% sulphur content.
MARAD Offers Grants for LNG Conversion

The U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) issued a request for proposals for projects focusing on vessel conversion to natural gas in an effort to measure changes in emissions before and after conversion. The total amount of funding available is $900,000. Eligible applicants include vessel owners, operators or sponsors of U.S.-flag vessels operating on inland, coastal waterways or the Great Lakes. Nor Lines Readies New LNG Cargo Ship

Nor Linesâ new flagship MV Kvitbjørn is ready for its naming ceremony and regular operation as âthe most environmentally friendly ship in the world,â the vesselâs owner announced. The naming ceremony will take place on April 16 at Skagenkaien in Stavanger, Norway. âMV Kvitbjørn is the first of two new natural gas-powered cargo ships which will replace older tonnage on route between northern Europe and Norway,â Nor Lines CEO Tor Arne Borge said.

A naming ceremony was held on April 9, 2015 in South Korea for SCF Mitre, the fourth vessel in a series of state-of-the-art Atlanticmax-type LNG carriers built for Sovcomflot (SCF Group). The vessel, as with her sistership SCF Melampus that joined SCF Groupâs fleet in January 2015, will be operated under a long-term time charter to Royal Dutch Shell. A series of Atlanticmax-type LNG carriers have been constructed under a joint project developed by Sovcomflot and STX Offshore & Shipbuilding.

WesPac Midstream LLC (WesPac) and its affiliate Clean Marine Energy LLC (CME), announced a construction contract with Conrad Orange Shipyard, Inc., a division of Conrad Shipyard, LLC, to build the first dedicated LNG bunker barge for the marine market in North America.
