While much of the focus on coverage of the Chinese shipbuilding industry is on big shipbuilding, Maritime Reporter switches gears this month to explore activities in select boatbuilding sectors. The Damen boatbuilding name is ubiquitous around the world, and China is certainly no exeception. The Damen Yichang Shipyard in China started ops in 1999 as a JV between Damen Shipyards Group and Sinotrans CSC, focused on building cargo vessels from the Dutch company’s portfolio.

If you drive just south of I-10 in Pascagoula, Miss., within 10 minutes you find yourself on the doorstep of VT Halter Marine, arguably one of the more diverse and active shipyards in the U.S. The company, which is a subsidiary of Vision Technologies Systems, Inc. (VTS), operates three facilities in Jackson County, Miss., and today supports about 1,600 full time employees as well as about 1,600 vendors and subcontractors.

Though the market for Offshore Support Vessels (OSVs) is soft, advances in technology, fit and finish in the sector is unrivaled in any other maritime niche over the past five years. Crowley Maritime Corp. has been honored with the 2015 Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) Chairman’s Earth Day Award in recognition of the organization’s companywide environmental stewardship initiatives. The announcement was made during a Professional Environmental Management Association luncheon held in Seal Beach, Calif., earlier this week. FMC Chairman Mario Cordero will present a plaque commemorating the award to Crowley during a future recognition ceremony in Washington D.C.
GE Gas Turbines Earn LR Design Appraisal to Marine NVR

GE Marine’s LM6000 aeroderivative marine gas turbine PC and PG models have received Lloyd’s Register’s Design Appraisal Document to the Marine Naval Vessel Rules (NVR). According to Ge, the fuel-efficient LM6000 simple-cycle gas turbine delivers over 40% thermal efficiency. The GE LM6000PC marine produces 42 megawatts (MW)/59,900 shaft horsepower (shp) and the more powerful PG model has an output of 52 MW/70,275 shp.

Trelleborg’s marine systems operation has received a patent for its innovative ‘slide in, slide out’ or ‘SISO’ marine fender system, which is now in operation in Dampier, Western Australia, in addition to a number of other sites across the region. The system has been designed to make fender maintenance more straightforward and less time consuming, by utilizing removable sliding panels, reducing the time taken to complete a fender wear pad change-out.
