Second LNG-powered Cement Carrier Delivered

Dutch shipbuilder Ferus Smit has delivered the second LNG-powered cement carrier, MV Ireland, to owners JT Cement, a joint venture between Swedish shipping company Erik Thun AB and Norway’s KG Jebsen Cement. MV Ireland, along with sister vessel MV Greenland delivered in December 2015, are the first ever dry cargo vessels with an LNG fuelled propulsion system and LNG tanks integrated inside the hull, the builder said.

The Electrolytic Cation Exchange Module (E-CEM), developed at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), provides the Navy the capability to produce raw materials necessary to develop synthetic fuel stock at sea or in remote locations. The NRL, Material Science and Technology Division, has been granted the first U.S. patent for a method to simultaneously extract carbon dioxide and hydrogen from seawater.

The design and technical features of Finland's newest icebreaker Polaris were presented on Monday, June 6, in Helsinki as part of the CIMAC World Congress. IB Polaris is the most environmentally friendly diesel-electric icebreaker ever built. It uses both low sulphur diesel and LNG as fuel, which significantly reduces its emissions. The special hull form and propulsion arrangement will minimize ice resistance and maximize the icebreaking capacity of the vessel.
