U.K. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson paid a visit to Coldharbour Marine recently as the ballast water treatment system manufacturer’s facility in Nottinghamshire gears up for significant export-oriented production. Coldharbour Marine has spent more than 10 years researching and developing the system based on unique patented in-tank inert gas technology, which the manufacturer said is now undergoing rapid commercialization. Boris Johnson’s timing was no coincidence.
Rolls-Royce Bags 15 Engine Order in Norway

Rolls-Royce said it has signed a deal to supply 15 gas engines to Norwegian Ferry Company, Torghatten Nord AS. The engines will power five Multi Maritime designed LNG ferries operating between Bergen and Stord. Kjell Harloff, Rolls-Royce, Vice President, Engines – Marine, said, “Since the introduction of our first marine gas engines 10 years ago, Rolls-Royce has delivered more than 700 gas engines on land and at sea accumulating over 25 million running hours of operating experience.
HHI Reports Surge in Shipbuilding Orders

South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) Group said it has won 62 new ship orders worth $3.8 billion for January-May period this year, a 500 percent increase for the comparable period last year when it received 12 ship orders worth $1 billion. In May alone, HHI Group netted 20 ships worth $1.3 billion, and the total number and value of ships HHI Group won in May can be increased to 29 ships and $1.9 billion if all the options the group has are to be exercised.

Japanese cruise organization Peace Boat has signed a letter of intent (LOI) with the Finnish shipbuilding company Arctech Helsinki Shipyard Inc. Peace Boat director and founder Yoshioka Tatsuya, Esko Mustamaki, CEO from Arctech and Jon Rysst, Regional Manager North Europe, from Classification Society DNV GL, announced the agreement during Nor-Shipping. The Kongsberg Information Management System (K-IMS) has now had more than 100 installations for vessel owners and charterers in the LNG sector. As interest in data-sharing for operational efficiency grows in the LNG sector, Kongsberg has conducted several successful customer trials to show the capabilities and benefits of integrating K-IMS in the last year. K-IMS is designed to enable continuous access to data both on board and ashore through an interactive web portal solution.

Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri and Italian energy company Eni will together work on projects for sustainable development and support the use of gas for transport. Fincantieri CEO Giuseppe Bono and Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for cooperative research and development, including possible studies in the field of energy systems, with particular reference to the natural gas transport chain.

The contract is for one unit, with option for three more units which are currently being built at Samsung Heavy Industries in Korea. Oslo-listed Flex LNG has signed contracts to buy six new liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels for its fleet by 2019, as it bets on increasing fuel demand from Britain and other countries, its chief executive told Reuters. The gas shipping company said earlier this year it was considering buying the six vessels, each with around 170,000 cubic metres of capacity, subject to securing funding for the $1.2 billion transaction.
