Kjeld Åbo, Chairman of CIMAC (the International Council on Combustion Engines) Fuels Working Group and Director Customer Support, Two Stroke Marine at MAN Diesel & Turbo, has said that the IMOâs proposed 0.5 percent marine fuel sulfur content limit was not unexpected but that there were a number of practical and strategic issues that needed to be addressed if the new regulations were to be implemented successfully by 2020.
Wärtsilä Re-liquefaction Plants Ordered for Newbuild LNG Carriers

Wärtsilä said it has been awarded contracts to supply its re-liquefaction plants to three new LNG carriers currently under construction. One ship is being built at the Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) yard in South Korea for the international owner and operator Gaslog. The others are for Norway based Knutsen and are being built at the Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) yard in South Korea. The order was booked for the Gaslog ship in April 2017 and for the Knutsen ships in May/June 2017.

Kongsberg Maritime said it has been awarded an Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Installation (EPCI) contract with Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG), a subsidiary of Siem Group. This is the second RoPax contract that Kongsberg Maritime has been awarded at FSG. Sovcomflotâs liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier Christophe de Margerie made the worldâs first-ever crossing of the Northern Sea in late August without the aid of an ice-breaker. The record-setting vessel is powered by ABBâs advanced Azipod electric propulsion technology. The 172,600 cubic meters Arctic LNG tanker, which features a lightweight steel reinforced hull, is the largest commercial ship to receive Arc7 certification, and is capable of travelling through ice up to 2.1m thick.

Trelleborgâs marine systems operation has supplied a suite of products to Shellâs Prelude FLNG facility, the largest offshore facility ever constructed. Prelude, which is 488 meters long, 74 meters wide, and made with more than 260,000 tons of steel, will extract and liquefy natural gas from a site in North West Australia. Trelleborg supplied its gas transfer technology and SafePilot navigational and piloting systems for Prelude.
New Study Looks at LNG Bunkering for Car Carriers

To help promote liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering in Asia, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the Ports and Harbors Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism of Japan (MLIT) will helm a working group to conduct a feasibility study on LNG bunkering for car carriers plying between Japan and Singapore. This working group will include Japanâs big three shippers â Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line), Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) and Mitsui O.S.K.

Naval architect Ian Lawson has been hired to join the naval architecture and marine engineering practice of Bristol Harbor Group, Inc. (BHGI). Lawson holds a B.S. in Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering from Webb Institute, where he served as Class President and Honor Council Chairman, and participated on the Education Committee, sailing team, jazz band and choir during his time at Webb. Lawson interned at BHGI in January and February of this year.

The Woodmac report we saw offered us cause for pause â âStrong activity from the (major oil companies)â while ânational oil companies have tightened their purse strings.â What Maritime Reporter found, was that national oil companies â nation-builders, for many â are putting their money in affiliate shipyards. First Containership Retrofitted to Run on LNG

The worldâs first containership retrofitted with a liquefied natural gas (LNG) engine was launched on August 23, 2017. Since May 2017, the 1,000 TEU containership Wes Amelie, owned by Wessels Reederei based in Harem/Ems, has undergone an engine conversion at the German Dry Docks in Bremerhaven, and from this point forward will run on LNG fuel. Experts from the Hamburg based company Nauticor were selected to conduct the vesselâs initial LNG bunkering at the Kühlhauskai in the Port of Bremerhaven.
