RADM Greene to assume post at National Defense University. In a move that has yet to be officially posted, Department Of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has reassigned Rear Admiral Philip H. Greene to a position at the National Defense University. Yesterday, Greene resigned at about 1000 hours in a staff meeting at Kings Point. He had been Superintendent at the nation's only federal maritime academy for about a year.

Bureau Veritas has extended its Condition Assessment Program to cover all types of yachts. BV Yacht CAP will provide owners with a certified and recognized evaluation of the real status of any yacht to promote the yacht’s condition to charterers, brokers, yacht managers, banks and leasing companies. “Big yachts are big business but a high risk area for charterers and financiers,” says Vincent Lefebvre, Head of CAP and Environment section, Bureau Veritas.

Crowley Presents Scholarship to University of North Florida Student
Crowley Maritime Corporation continued its commitment to education recently when it awarded Sunny Cavan, a student at the University of North Florida (UNF), with a Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarship. Cavan, who is pursuing degrees in both international business, and transportation and logistics, with a minor in Spanish, was chosen for her strong academic record, her interest in pursuing a career in the transportation and logistics field and financial need.
Pirate Activity in the Red Sea/Eritrea Area
Further to our previous media releases detailing a potential new trend in pirate tactics in an area of the Red Sea off Eritrea (see Figure 1), Neptune Maritime Security has had the opportunity to examine the available data through our Intelligence Bank, including material supplied by intelligence sources, and presents the following report to interested parties. In July, pirate activity off Eritrea was limited to small numbers of pirates mounting similarly small-scale attacks on shipping.
Donjon Marine Refloats Sunken Barge 2001 on Kill Van Kull
In early August, the fully loaded hopper barge 2001 sank in approximately 25 feet of water while transiting the Kill Van Kull, a waterway that connects Newark Bay to New York Harbor. The barge was loaded with approximately 1,500 tons of shredded steel, as reported by owners. Donjon removed the cargo, rigged the barge for lift, and later refloated it and returned it to its owners. The barge had a light ship displacement of more than 500 tons.
Permanent Underwater Insert Repair in Algeciras
Recently Hydrex Spain carried out a permanent insert repair on a 225-meter cargo vessel at anchorage in Algeciras. The vessel had suffered a stress-related crack on the port side next to the bilge keel and water was coming into the ballast tank. The classification society therefore required that a repair be carried out before the end of the month. After arrival on site and installation of a workstation, both an on-board and an underwater inspection were made of the damaged area.
