Tognum Receives Indian Coast Guard Contract
Tognum received a substantial follow-up order for the delivery of MTU engines and automation systems for 20 new vessels of the Indian Coast Guard. The value of the contract, which has been signed by the Tognum subsidiary MTU Asia, is in the medium two-digit million euro range. The delivery of the total of 60 engines will be between 2011 and 2014. In 2009, Tognum has already signed two deals for engines and automation systems for the Indian Coast Guard with a total value of 32.5 million euro.

SeaArk Delivers Survey Boats to Corps of Engineers
SeaArk Marine, Inc. recently delivered two 2610 survey boats to the Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District. The vessels are assigned to Pleasant Valley, Iowa and Lock and Dam 18 in Gladstone, Ill. The vessels are powered by twin Mercury Optimax, 225 hp outboard engines with side mounted dual controls and hydraulic trim tabs. These vessels can easily attain a top speed in excess of 34kts fully manned. All enclosed cabin spaces are fully insulated, air conditioned and heated.
BOEMRE Seeking First-Time Environmental Enforcement Officer and Chief of Regulations
WASHINGTON â The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE) today announced it is seeking to fill two key positions for the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), one of the two new bureaus that will start operating on Oct. 1, 2011, as part of the reorganization of the former Minerals Management Service (MMS). The positions to be filled are a first-ever Environmental Enforcement Officer and the Regulations Development Branch Supervisor.
Piracy in the Indian Ocean
Somali based pirates continue to cause serious challenges to merchant vessels transiting the Indian Ocean.At the time of writing, EU NAVFOR statistics indicate that there are 26 vessels and 582 crew held captive off the coast of Somalia (not taking into account an unknown number of smaller dhows and fishing vessels that have been seized). Moreover, the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) reported that Somali pirates hijacked 49 vessels in 2010, an increase from 47 in 2009.

WHOI-led Team Locates Air France Wreckage
A search team led by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) has located the wreckage of Air France Flight 447 some 3,900 meters, or nearly 2.5 miles, below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean off Brazilâs northeastern coast. The team left the port of Suape, Brazil, aboard the vessel Alucia on March 22, arriving at the search site on March 25. After one week of searching, one of the missionâs three autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), the REMUS 6000s, detected debris on the seafloor.

The tragic loss of life on board the S/V Quest last week, which saw four American citizens die at the hands of Somali pirates, has once again raised the issue of the use of force into the headlines. The killings come as the shipping industry reconsiders its position on the presence of weapons on board vessels, with the UAE Shipping Association (UAESA) reversing their decision against the use of private security guards aboard commercial vessels.
Northâs 150 Year Fund Raises US$150 000
A charity fund set up by North P&I club last year as part of its 150th anniversary initiatives has raised a total of US$150 000 for maritime and local charities. Chairman Albert Engelsman of Dutch shipping group Wagenborg presented US$50 000 cheques today (29 March) to international maritime welfare charity the Sailorsâ Society and the UKâs Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), which provides a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service around the British coastline.
