Expanding Underwater Search Capabilities
Over the past year a number of Asian companies and government agencies have acquired underwater search equipment to aid in the location of lost objects and assist in performing survey operations. In China, Guangzhou Advanced Maritime Academy has added a remote operated underwater vehicle (ROV) to their program. Sea Floor Surveys Support Texas Maritime Trade

First DDG Modernization Warship Departs on Deployment
The Aegis guided-missile destroyer USS John Paul Jones (DDG 53) departed Naval Base San Diego Nov. 29, for an independent seven-month deployment to the 5th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR). The first ship to complete the DDG modernization (DDGMOD) midlife hull, mechanical, and electrical upgrade, John Paul Jones is a hallmark of both the platform and a successful maintenance program. The DDGMOD upgrade consisted of extensive changes through every compartment of the ship.
U.S. Shipyards Fight to Return Icebreakers to Service
The Polar Sea heavy icebreaker that the U.S. Coast Guard plans to mothball is in excellent condition and could be returned to active service in two years, giving the government a decade or more to search for longer-term solutions, a representative of America’s shipyards told Congress last week. The United States currently has no active heavy icebreakers and only one medium vessel to protect rapidly intensifying national security and economic interests in the Arctic and Antarctic.

Metal Shark Awarded $192M Coast Guard Contract
Louisiana Manufacturer will Replace Coast Guard's Small Response Boat Fleet. Metal Shark Boats has been awarded a contract to replace the U.S. Coast Guard's fleet of Response Boat - Small (RB-S) vessels. Up to 470 boats will be delivered across the Coast Guard fleet, with an additional 20 boats will be available to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, with another ten slated for purchase by the U.S. Navy.
Kvichak Building Two NYPD Boats
Kvichak Marine Industries, of Seattle, WA, is currently constructing two 44’11” X 14’7” Response Boat Medium – C (RB-M C) vessels for operation by the New York City Police Harbor Unit (NYPD). Kvichak delivered the first RB-M C, harbor launch #451, to the NYPD in May 2010. These vessels will be part of the NYPD fleet for missions of proactive anti-terrorism patrol, search, rescue and recovery operations.
