At 19,000 TEU, the largest container ship in the world is now picking up speed – with a high-performance rudder from the Hamburg-based company. The christening of the CSCL GLOBE containership from China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) at the end of November drew a great deal of attention in the shipping industry, because, with space for 19,000 standard containers (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit or TEU), it is the largest one in the world.

Elkon (Istanbul), a subsidiary of Imtech Marine, has been awarded an interesting contract from Sedef Shipyard (Tuzla, Istanbul) for the delivery of the electrical equipment, propulsion system and services for two Canadian Seaspan hybrid ferries. The two, 148.9 m, dual-fuelled (diesel and liquefied natural gas) ferries are propelled by a hybrid-electrical propulsion system and can accommodate up to 59 trailers.

Possible Vancouver Tug Strike – Update

Tug company operator Seaspan and GUILD (the union representing captains, mates and engineers) have agreed to enter blind arbitration. GAC reported in its daily Hot Port News report. Seaspan will defer the imposition of new terms and GUILD will not take a strike vote. The situation is different, however, with the International Longshoremen Workers' Union (ILWU) representing deckhand and cook. Seaspan has withdrawn the contract imposition.
