Vintage Gyrocompass Donated by Northrop Grumman
Northrop Grumman donate a Sperry Mk 14 gyrocompass & leather-bound operator's manual to HMCS Sackville Canadian Naval Memorial Trust. The vinatage gyro compass is for installation aboard the restored HMCS Sackville, a World War II-era corvette on the Halifax waterfront. The donation was presented at the Canadian Defence Security and Aerospace Exhibition Atlantic (DEFSEC) 2012, held annually in Halifax.

Coast Guard Michigan Takes Delivery of High-speed Cutter
US Coast Guard Station Michigan City, Ind. takes delivery of new 45-foot Response Boat-Medium, built by Marinette Marine, of Manitowoc, Wis. The RB-M can respond faster than previous boats of similar size with a top speed in excess of 40 knots and has advanced search capability with an installed forward-looking infrared search technology. Additionally, with twin jet propulsion, the vessel is able to respond in shallower water.

Chinese Maritime Safety Administration ship 'Haixun 31' to be hosted by US 14th Coast Guard District in Honolulu Harbor. Specialised Spanish counter-piracy patrol vessel joins EU Naval Force in Gulf of Aden. Boat-towed Detectors Assist Researchers and Salvors
A number of archaeological groups and marine service companies are acquiring boat-towed metal detectors to assist in locating shipwrecks and to perform geophysical surveys. These devices can locate a variety of targets including the piles of magnetic ballast stones found on many old wrecks, gold and silver bars, cannons, anchors, pipelines, cables, and various metal debris which must be removed from an area before dredging.
Australia Ends Indian Ocean Refugee Boat SAR
Australian Maritime Safety Authority calls off search & rescue (SAR) as no further realistic prospect of finding any more survivors. On the final day of the operation four merchant vessels and HMAS Maitland recovered 55 survivors. All survivors, including three with injuries, have been taken to Merak, Indonesia where they are receiving medical attention. One body was recovered during the operation.

Northwest Passage Wrecks Hunt Launched
The Canadian government launches its largest search yet for the lost ships of Sir John Franklin's doomed 1845 quest for the Northwest Passage. This year's search, led by Parks Canada, is the fourth government-led expedition over the past five years, and is by far the biggest, involving a much larger alliance of federal departments and other public and private interests. A previous large-scale search for the Franklin ships was launched by National Defence in 1967 as part of Canada's centennial.
