A vote for independence from the U.K. would have a negative effect on the Scottish shipping and offshore maritime sector, according to a survey by leading international accountant and shipping adviser Moore Stephens. Northern Sea Route Opens Earlier than Last Year
The Global Ice Center at Weathernews Inc. announced that the Northern Sea Route (NSR) bordering Russia is open to commercial shipping traffic as of August 21, 2014 – two weeks earlier than last season, when lower than average temperatures resulted in slow pace of melting in the Arctic Ocean. Last summer, the northeastern passage opened at the beginning of September. Meanwhile, large areas of sea ice still remain in the northwestern passage along the Canadian coast.

CMB Cancels Order with S.Korean Shipbuilder
Belgian dry bulk shipping group CMB said on Tuesday it had cancelled an order for four vessels with South Korean shipbuilder Samjin set to be delivered in 2014. CMB, which added that the shipbuilder was not able to deliver the four handysize vessels on time, said Samjin had returned $30 million in advances, including interest. In late 2011, CMB's unit Bocimar signed a deal with Samjin for the delivery of six vessels, with two options for another two.

Piracy’s gone away, right? You’d be forgiven for thinking that. The predominant narrative for the Indian Ocean is that Piracy has been suppressed to an extent that ship-owners are requesting fewer guards, even unarmed in some cases. Certainly private security team composition has adjusted beneath the “rule of four” and the nationality of guards has shifted significantly away from the UK only model.
