The shipbuilding company Kleven in Norway has announced a contract for two fishing stern trawlers to be designed and equipped by Rolls-Royce.

The fishing vessels have been ordered by the German company DFFU, which is fully owned by the Icelandic seafood company Samherji. The contract is worth in excess of $17million to Rolls-Royce.

Samherhji is among the world’s largest investors in the fishing industry and they have decided on to two highly innovative vessel concepts of Roll-Royce NVC 374 WP design.

Signing the contract with Kleven, Torstein Mar Baldvinson, CEO, Samherji Group said: “Our aim is sustainable fishing and these two new vessels mark an important next step in our company’s development. A huge improvement in the working and living conditions for our crew is a main objective for making this commitment. As well as fulfilling significant environmental criteria, we are confident that these vessels – designed and built in Norway – will take the company and its employees into a positive future development.”

The vessels will be 80m long and with hulls of ICE 1A* class, and equipped with a wide range of Rolls-Royce equipment, including main engines, thrusters, automation, winches and the fuel efficient Wave Piercing design. Operational efficiency, low emissions, crew comfort, safety and excellent seakeeping capabilities have been the main considerations in the development of the ship design and equipment package.

“Our design and equipment will help ensure that this will be among the most effective and modern fishing vessels in the world. Both vessels will be equipped with our latest B33:45 engine and they will be the first among fishing vessels to feature our Wave Piercing bow design.”said John Knudsen, Rolls-Royce President Commercial Marine.

The vessel encompasses an onboard factory for the production of fish filets, and has a storage capacity of 1,400m3. There’s also a 550m3 large packaging and freezer room on deck.

The two vessels are to be delivered from Kleven’s Myklebust Verft in Norway in February and June 2017.

This is the second fishing industry related contract signed in June for a Rolls-Royce designed vessel to be built by a Kleven yard. On 13 June Rolls-Royce and Kleven announced an order for a Live Fish Carrier for the Norwegian ship owner Sølvtrans AS, one of the world’s largest transporters of live fish. Since the early 1970s Rolls-Royce has designed about 130 vessels of NVC design for the fishing industry.
