Singapore Navy USVs Enter Operation

The Republic of Singapore Navy’s maritime security unmanned surface vessels (USVs) began operational patrols in January 2025, operating alongside manned ships such as the RSN’s Littoral Mission Vessels (LMVs) to enhance the security of Singapore’s waters. The 16.9-meter USVs add another layer of surveillance and operational response. They conduct patrols, and when required, will investigate and interdict suspicious vessels. Robbers Active in Singapore Strait

The ReCAAP ISC has issued a warning about the continued occurrence of robberies onboard ships while underway in the Singapore Strait and warns of the possibility of further incidents.There were 11 robberies between January 1 and February 3 onboard ships while underway in the eastbound lane of the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS). Langh Ship Newbuild Sofia En Route to Europe

Finnish shipping company Langh Ship earlier this month reported that the final vessel in its multipurpose newbuilding series was named during a ceremony in Ningbo, China, and has begun its journey toward Europe through Singapore Strait and around Africa.The vessel, Sofia, built at the Wuhu Shipyard, is purposely built to carry the stainless steel coils that Outokumpu produces in Finland. The liner service is established between Outokumpu factories in Tornio, Finland and Terneuzen in the Netherlands.

Singapore Rescues 12 from Wooden Boat

At about 5.15pm local Singapore time on August 13, the Marine Safety Control Centre operated by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) was notified that an Indonesian-flagged vessel was partially submerged and drifting south of Changi.Two MPA and two Police Coast guard vessels were immediately despatched to render assistance, and all 12 people on board were safely transferred and sent ashore. No Singaporeans were onboard the vessel.The partially-submerged vessel has now been towed to safety. No debris or oil spill were observed.

Three Bulk Carriers Robbed in Singapore Strait

Three bulk carriers were robbed in the Singapore Strait earlier this week, a Singapore-based regional maritime security centre on Friday. One of the busiest commercial waterways in the world has seen a spike in piracy in recent years. The incidents of "petty crime" happened between Aug 8-9, when the ships were in the Phillip Channel in the Singapore Strait, said the Information Fusion Centre, which is a regional facility hosted by the Singapore navy. One of the ships was flagged to Cyprus, while the other two carried Liberia flags, the center said in a statement.

Cruise Passenger Falls Overboard in Singapore Strait

Indonesia Seizes Iranian-Flagged Supertanker Suspected of Illegal Oil Transfer

Indonesia's coast guard said on Tuesday it seized an Iranian-flagged supertanker suspected of involvement in the illegal transshipment of crude oil, and vowed to toughen maritime patrols.The MT Arman 114 was carrying 272,569 metric tons of light crude oil, valued at 4.6 trillion rupiah ($304 million), when it was seized last week, the Indonesian authorities said.The Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) was suspected of transferring oil to another vessel without a permit on Friday, the Southeast Asian nation's maritime security agency said.The vessel was captured after being spotted in Indonesia's North Natuna Sea, carrying out a ship-to-ship oil transfer with the Cameroon-flagged MT S Tinos, the agency's chief, Aan Kurnia, said.

Oil Supertanker Grounded in Indonesia Will Take a Month to Free - Navy

Indonesian authorities said on Monday it could take up to a month to free a crude oil tanker stuck in its waters, while the United States slapped sanctions on the vessel for alleged links to Hezbollah and a branch of Iran's Revolutionary Guards. The Indonesian navy has been trying to free the Djibouti-registered vessel, Young Yong, which ran aground off Indonesia's Riau Islands on Oct. 26. The U.S. last week issued sanctions against an international oil smuggling network it said supports Hezbollah and Iran's Quds Force, targeting dozens of people, companies, and tankers as Washington sought to mount pressure on Tehran. The Young Yong was among the vessels sanctioned. U.S. embassy officials in Singapore and Jakarta did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Indonesia Jails Captain of Tanker Arrested for Illegal anchorage

The captain of a fuel tanker arrested by the Indonesian navy in May on suspicion of illegally anchoring in its waters has been jailed for 15 days and fined 200 million rupiah ($13,350), a navy spokesman said on Wednesday.The Nord Joy, a Panama-flagged oil products tanker, was detained on May 30 whilst anchored in Indonesian waters to the east of the Singapore Strait, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.Indonesian navy officers asked for an unofficial payment of $375,000 to release the vessel, two people involved in the negotiations told Reuters at the time. Piracy and armed robbery against ships is on the rise in Asia, ReCAAP ISC reveals in its latest monthly report. In October, nine incidents of armed robbery against ships and no piracy incidents were reported in Asia.
