Get on Board with Shipyard Electrical Safety
After teaching electrical safety for many years, one tends to understand the regulations, and the standards more than the average safety professional. We live them most every day. We also understand what regulations and standards apply to shipyard employment and what regulations and standards apply to industry â and which apply to both. For your safety, you should know about electrical safe work practices and shipboard electrical awareness. If you do not believe that you should know about electrical safe work practicesâŚ
12th International Submarine Races Announced
The Foundation for Underwater Research and Education (FURE) announced that the 12th International Submarine Races (ISR), a biennial engineering design competition, is scheduled to be held the week of June 22-26, 2013, at NSWC Carderock Division in West Bethesda, Md. The Foundation supports the ISR during the two-year process to design, build and take part in the human powered submarine competition. FUREâs objective via the ISR is to raise interest and participation in engineering education and to increase competence and awareness among ocean engineering students. This will be the 12th in the series of alternate summer races that test the creative skills of young engineering students from colleges, universities and technical and high schools from throughout the world.
Engineers to Meet to Discuss Electric Installations on Ships
The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) is updating the IEEE 45 standard for electrical installations on ships. This is a big undertaking because so much has changed with new power systems on ships, from the cruise industry to integrated electric propulsion systems on warships. âWith new voltages, power distribution systems and casualty power arrangements, the standard really needs a refresh,â says Moni Islam, an electrical engineer who is chairing the IEEE committee reviewing and revising the standard. Islam is asking qualified electrical engineers, to include maritime experience if possible, to contact him. He is inviting any and all interested partiesâŚ
