Singapore Oil Spill Spreads Along Coast

An oil spill off southern Singapore has spread to other areas of the island's coast and is threatening a marine reserve, government agencies said, adding that authorities were intensifying efforts to mop up the fuel.The oil spilled into Singaporean waters after a Netherlands-flagged dredger struck a stationary Singapore-flagged bunker vessel on Friday afternoon in the southern port of Pasir Panjang. The dredger Vox Mariner had reported a sudden loss in engine and steering control before its allision with bunker vessel Marine Honour.

DEME Takes Delivery of New Dredger

Dutch company Royal IHC has delivered the newbuild trailing suction hopper dredger River Thames to Belgium's DEME.The dredger, designed and built by IHC, is based on the TSHD LESSE, delivered to Baggerbedrijf de Boer by IHC in 2019. The vessel is designed to maintain sea and inland waterways, as well as perform land reclamation. "The compact design of the TSHD is characterized by a small draught and can be deployed for projects in shallow water worldwide," Royal IHC said.The River Thames was built for DEME at PaxOcean Graha, Batam, Indonesia, and will now get ready for its first project.

Jan De Nul Dredger Arrives in Belgium

Jan De Nul Group’s newest Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger Sanderus has just arrived in Belgium to execute maintenance dredging works in the coastal ports. Not just any dredger, but an ULEv with ultra-low emissions as this vessel has a two-stage catalytic filter system on board.The dredger Sanderus is Jan De Nul's fourth Ultra-Low Emission vessel (ULEv) that has been launched within the past year. The vessel was built in Singapore and left the shipyard in January after offshore tests. Another three major vessels with a same technology and ultra-low emissions are under construction.

SMS Completes Dredger Refit

UK ship repairer SMS Southampton said it has completed a dredger refit in the port of Southampton for Tarmac Marine.Work on the 1997-built City of Chichester was completed in a dedicated, controlled berth alongside at Williams Shipping’s berths in Southampton. Jan De Nul Completes Liepaja Port Dredging

Luxembourg-headquartered dredging and construction engineering company Jan De Nul Group completed the capital dredging works for the improvement of Liepaja Port in Latvia ahead of schedule.In order to allow larger vessels to enter and leave the port of Liepaja fully loaded, the access channel to the port needed to be adapted. As part of the Liepaja Port Water Infrastructure Works, Jan De Nul Group was awarded the dredging works.The scope for Jan De Nul Group entailed the removal of 2.7 million m³ of sediments to deepen the port access channel from 12.5 m to 14.5 m, and to create a new navigation channel of -14 m towards one of the main bulk terminals within the port area.Jan De Nul Group faced challenging weather and soil conditions during the execution of the project.

Keppel Delivers TSHD Sanderus to Jan De Nul

Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd (Keppel O&M) delivered the 6000m3 Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger (TSHD) Sanderus to Jan De Nul Group.The Ultra-Low Emission vessel (ULEv) is the fourth dredger that Keppel O&M has delivered to Jan De Nul Group.According to a press release from the shipbuilder, this follows the delivery of three 3500m3 TSHDs earlier this year, all ULEvs and the world's first European Union (EU) Stage V dredgers. Keppel O&M is also currently building Ortelius, a 6000m3 dredger which is identical to the Sanderus, for Jan De Nul Group, with delivery expected in 1Q 2020.Sanderus is fitted with a two-stage filtering technique for exhaust gases.

CSD General MacArthur Hits the Water

Texas-based, family-owned dredging business Callan Marine has  recently launched the General MacArthur, one of the largest cutter suction dredges in the U.S. market.At 290 feet in length and a 9 foot draft, the General MacArthur boasts 24,000 total installed horsepower.Powered by 3 Cat-MAK diesel engines, the dredge has a fuel capacity of over 300,000 gallons, giving it the capability to work on all U.S. coasts and waterways, as well as globally.The 32” cutter dredge General MacArthur is designed to perform capital, maintenance and beneficial use dredging (such as marsh creation and beach renourishment.) Wärtsilä Partners to Develop Hybrid Dredger

Wärtsilä has signed a strategic development agreement with Chinese state-owned shipbuilder CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Company Limited Huangpu Wenchong. The five year agreement is aimed at the joint development of a hybrid powered dredger, but could possibly extend to other hybrid vessels as well. The agreement was signed on December 3 at the Marintec conference and exhibition in Shanghai.The purpose of the agreement is to build a cooperation framework and working mechanism for the research and development of hybrid power systems.

Elbe Project: Underwater Storage Areas Completed

The Port of Hamburg announced that in the course of the Elbe's river dredging, construction stones to improve usability for shipping, were successfully build into the "Medemrinne" and "Neufelder Sand".Specifically from March until October 2019, around 1,200,000 tons were build in the above mentioned underwater deposit areas (UDAs).Machulez KG, a member of the Cuxhaven Port Authority (HWG), coordinated the logistics requirements between the underwater construction companies, the quarry and the locally responsible institutions. TSHD Meuse River Launched

The trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Meuse River, built for DEME Group at the Royal IHC shipyard in Krimpen aan den IJssel, is launched.The launch ceremony of the the 7,950m³ vessel took place at IHC’s shipyard in Krimpen aan den IJssel, the Netherlands."Meuse River has the same innovative design as the award winning IHC-built TSHD Scheldt  River, which joined the DEME fleet in 2017 and since then operated non-stop on waterways and access channels in Europe," said a press release.Meuse River features several energy smart technologies, developed by DEME and IHC, such as a hybrid dredge pump drive system to reduce the effect of load variations.For automation of the dredging process, IHC developed the intelligent IHC ECO automation package, which results in high dredge performance.

Royal Boskalis Wins $93.7mln European Contracts

The trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Bonny River built at Royal IHC’s Chinese partner yard COSCO Guangdong Shipyard was recently delivered to the Belgian dredging company DEME. First European Dual-Fuel Dredger Conversion

Damen Shiprepair & Conversion has signed off on the conversion of a dredger to dual-fuel operation on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and marine gas oil (MGO), and which is powered by MAN 35/44DF engines.The conversion of the ‘Samuel de Champlain’ is the first of its kind in Europe and is part of an EU-supported initiative to promote LNG propulsion in short-sea vessels operating along the European Atlantic coast.The 117m, 8,500m³ trailing suction hopper dredger is owned by Rouen-based GIE Dragages-Ports and operated by Port of Nantes-Saint-Nazaire.

The first European dredger converted to dual-fuel LNG/MGO propulsion has departed Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque (DSDu) to return to work, 23 months after contract signing. Bonny River Joins DEME Fleet

The Belgian dredging, environmental and marine engineering group DEME is investing in a new generation of trailing suction hopper dredgers which will be trendsetting in coastal protection and dredging hard soils.DEME ordered newest generation trailing suction hopper dredger  'Bonny River' at Royal IHC."Thanks to the combination of unique characteristics such as an extremely long suction pipe, a large transport capacity with limited depth and an additional heavy duty rock draghead, the multidisciplinary ship can be used effectively in shallow water and in hard soils.," DEME said in a press release.With the 'Bonny River', DEME is responding to the macroeconomic trend of maritime sand extraction at greater depths and further offshore.

ABB Wins Dredger Package Deal

ABB was contracted to deliver integrated vessel systems to two dredgers being built by Keppel Offshore & Marine for Van Oord, a key contract win for a new market: specialized dredgers.This is ABB’s largest dredging vessel project for a European end customer, a contract that covers integrated electrical power, automation, control and navigation packages for a pair of 10,500 cu. m. capacity trailing suction hopper dredgers built for the Dutch dredging and marine contractor Van Oord.

Damen is well-known for its comprehensive range of standard dredgers, but it has now added a radically different design to its portfolio: a twin-hulled, deep cutter suction dredger designated the DCSD500. Wärtsilä launched the Wärtsilä HY for Dredger, a new product based on Wärtsilä’s HY hybrid propulsion technology, aimed at enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of dredging operations.The product was recently unveiled at a Future Dredger Day event held at the Wärtsilä's Hybrid Center in Trieste, Italy. The Wärtsilä HY for Dredger features a combination of different power sources, including the engines and energy storage systems, the power distribution equipment, and the Energy Management System (EMS). The EMS ensures instant load taking and dynamic power demand.

Jan De Nul Launches Low Emission Vessel

Jan De Nul Group launched its fourth Ultra-Low Emission vessel last week in Singapore. It concerns the 6,000 m³ Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger Sanderus built at the Keppel Offshore & Marine shipyard.This green vessel is the first of two identical medium-sized hopper dredgers under construction at Keppel O&M’s shipyard in Singapore, fitted with a two-stage filtering technique for exhaust gases.In total, Jan De Nul Group designed six Ultra-Low Emission vessels (ULEvs) for its fleet: five Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers and one Offshore Jack-Up Installation Vessel, the Voltaire.

Van Oord's Werkendam Begins First Job

Dutch dredging specialist Van Oord said LNG-powered crane vessel, Werkendam started work on its first project this week.The world’s first LNG-powered crane vessel is carrying out maintenance work in the port of Rotterdam, Van Oord said in a press release.Port of Rotterdam Authority, is pleased with this initial deployment: "We are encouraging the transition from fuel oil to LNG as a fuel for shipping. It is good that operational ships are taking the lead," says Ronald Paul, COO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority.The Werkendam is also the first Van Oord vessel to run entirely on LNG. With a storage tank on the aft deck, the Werkendam can store enough LNG to sail and operate for fourteen days without refuelling.

Jan De Nul Welcomes Three WIDs

After having recently announced the construction of its mega offshore jack-up installation vessel Voltaire, Jan De Nul Group has extended its fleet with three water injection dredgers (WID).Giovanni Venturi is the first out of three to be delivered by PaxOcean Shipyard. Jan De Nul Group recently purchased three offshore supply vessels and ordered the Singaporean shipyard to convert them into seagoing Water Injection Dredgers. Giovanni Venturi will be mobilized to its first project in Argentina.
