Chinese Yard Launches SUPER GREEN 8500 for Carisbrooke

On Monday September 26, the Chinese shipyard Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Ltd. will launch Yno YZJ2010-931, the first vessel of the ‘SUPER GREEN 8500’ type for Carisbrooke Shipping.

With this vessel the yard is the first Chinese shipyard launching a vessel with a Groot Cross-Bow®. Despite the economical difficult times more vessels with a Groot Cross-Bow® are under construction at the moment. The Dutch naval architect, Groot Ship Design, designed for Dutch / British Carisbrooke Shipping an innovating multipurpose cargo vessel, the 8500 dwt ‘SUPER GREEN 8500’. Carisbrooke entered soon after the design into contract with Yangzijiang Shipbuilding for building 4 vessels, not long after the first contract a second contract was issued for 4 more vessels lengthened up till 10000 dwt the ‘SUPER GREEN 10000’. Those two contracts show the confidence of Carisbrooke Shipping in the near future. The project is partly financed with support of EFRO (European fund for regional development) of the European Committee with assistance of the Dutch province Zuid-Holland (Subsidieregeling Clusterprojecten Zuid-Holland onder het OP Kansen voor West). On both designs not only the Groot Cross-Bow® is really showing of, but the complete vessels are designed with the latest design methods and features, realizing a high payload and flexible cargo intake in combination with a speed of over 12 knots. The fuel oil consumption will be less compared with other vessels of equal size. Carisbrooke expects a reduction in fuel consumption up to 30% (!) compared to vessels of equal tonnage. This is realized without special equipment or installations onboard. The EEDI (energy efficiency index) for the ‘SUPER GREEN 8500’ is calculated to be 9,72 being much better as many other designs and much lower as the per 2025 required index of 13,3.
The ‘SUPER GREEN 8500’ has a single cargo hold, is equipped with tweendecks panels and grainbulkheads allowing variations in the number of decks and compartments. The vessel is also equipped with two cargo cranes of 80 tons each. Included is ice class 1A according Finnish / Swedish rules, the combination with a main engine of only 2400 kW (which is extreme for this size of vessel) is possible because of a large diameter propeller and high efficient nozzle. An excessive program of model tests was run at HSVA at Hamburg and showed the great performance of the vessel in ice.
The shipyard Yangzijiang Shipbuilding is a known Chinese yard with proven quality standards, Carisbrooke has a permanent site team at the yard and together with classification society Germanischer Lloyd a first class vessel is built. The ‘SUPER GREEN 10000’ is almost equally executed as the ‘SUPER GREEN 8500’, because in the original design the possibility of lengthening the vessel was already considered. Important costs and time for shipyard and owner were saved. The biggest difference is the 2 hold execution of the ‘SUPER GREEN 10000’.
The Groot Cross-Bow® is an innovating bow based on the so called ‘wave piercing’ principle, the bow cuts through the wave instead of riding onto the wave. Groot Ship Design designed the bow, the hull lines and the configuration of propeller and nozzle in-house and in close cooperation with the owner Carisbrooke Shipping. Compared with conventional bow designs with flare a vessel with a Groot Cross-Bow® shall have a smooth ride with less pitching and less waste of energy and thus less consumption of fuel oil. Other advantage is the better comfort for crew in heavy conditions and less danger for damaging the cargo in heavy seas or bad weather. The Groot Cross-Bow® is the answer on the demands of ship owners for economic better designs and so reducing the cost per cargo ton mile. Carisbrooke is an owner facing the daily difficulties and challenges of today’s market, the answer to that is the Carisbrooke SUPER GREEN series of vessels.
