RS Reaches Several Agreements at Neva

During the maritime Neva exhibition, taking place this week in St Petersburg, Russia, a number of agreements were signed promoting use of advanced IT solutions and enhancement of professional training within the maritime industry.

Participation in NUPAS-CADMATIC Center establishment
Admiral S. O. Makarov State University of Sea and River Fleet, classification society Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS), Petrobalt Design Office and the Dutch company Numeriek Centrum Groningen (NCG) signed a quadripartite agreement on the establishment of NUPAS-CADMATIC Training and Innovation Center.

The center will work at the Makarov University. It will be part of a principally new training structure called upon to solve a wide range of key tasks of newcomer training and to put into practice the projects aimed at developing up-to-date automatic design facilities for shipbuilding and repair.

The center will instruct in 3D modeling and working drawings development in the Nupas-Cadmatic system. Using this system as an example, the students will enrich their knowledge of the ship design process and form a clearer outlook on the prospects of their future activities. The work of the center will make it possible to intensify the integration between the national educational standards and the international requirements, enter into cooperation with the leading world companies working in the sphere of ship design and construction and create conditions for the growth of those students’ creative skills who wish to realize their potential in shipbuilding.

Based on the terms of the Agreement, RS undertakes to provide the training center with normative documentation as necessary, rules, guidelines and other scientific and technical information setting down the requirements for the sea transport construction, repair and operation. Besides, the Register will participate in the curriculum development and the formation of the practical training program.

Beside ensuring the training center work, the University will render technical support, consultations and educational services to Russian design-and-engineering offices, shipbuilding and repair yards. NCG will undertake software supply and tutor training. Petrobalt Design Office will participate in fitting out the training center and provide documentation prototypes as necessary as well as standard ship components from different projects for practical training.

Cooperation agreement with Transas
Within the frames of the NEVA 2013 International Exhibition, classification society Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) and Transas Group signed an agreement on cooperation for maritime safety standards development, pollution prevention and training of the RS staff.

Pavel Shikhov, Chief Operating Officer of Russian Maritime Register of Shipping, and Andrey Belentiev, General Director of ZAO Transas signed the document.

By the terms of the agreement, RS and the Transas Group will organize joint research and promote innovations as well as state-of-the-art IT solutions in the areas of RS activity. Besides, partnership is planned in the development and implementation of advanced simulator technologies for the professional training, retraining and qualification upgrade of the RS staff. Modern technologies not only allow to acquire theoretical knowledge, but also to apply it in practice under conditions of training naturalization, thereby ensuring a substantial increase in the level of staff professional level. Using the Transas Group simulators, the RS surveyors will be able to train the survey procedures and techniques in respect of different types of ships in service as well as improve their skills in documenting the findings of the surveys.

The outcome of these activities directly depends on the qualifications of surveyors and their professional judgment on board the ship. Joint efforts with Makarov University on personnel training
Within the frames of the NEVA 2013 International Exhibition, Sergey Sedov, Chief Executive Officer of classification society RS and Sergey Baryshnikov, rector of the Admiral S. O. Makarov State University of Sea and River Fleet signed an agreement on cooperation.

RS considerable expertise in the development of rules, ship and offshore facilities survey under repair and in service as well as the achievements of the University as a leading educational and scientific center of maritime industry will serve as the basis for cooperation between the classification society and the University. Nowadays, the brisk growth of the Russian shipbuilding industry demands high personnel qualifications. The interaction of the parties will make it possible to redefine the staff training giving due regard to vital national and international requirements.

To implement the agreement, it is planned to make the most use of both the parties’ personnel and technological resources: highly qualified RS and University experts are going to participate in the educational programs to be carried out by both the parties at the training and simulator centers in St Petersburg and at regional branches. Besides, RS and the University will join their efforts in research and development work.

Strengthened cooperation with NAPA
RS and NAPA, a software house for ship design and operation today announced that RS will take NAPA software into use to be able to serve their customers even better.

Further expansion of RS presence on new and traditional markets demands first-class software tools to enhance client’s satisfaction. Shipyards, design offices and engineering companies require their drawings and calculations being reviewed and assessed by Class in shorter time with no compromise on quality and safety. NAPA software facilitate achievement of these goals. During design review of a newbuilding project or during existing ship modernization RS will use NAPA to assess and approve various calculations, such as stability calculations and statutory compliance.

Wider use of NAPA in RS will make data transfer between design bureau and classification society easier, and review of the calculations less time- and labor-consuming processes.

It is very likely that use of NAPA by RS will promote the adaptation of this modern software application to the Russian market where shipbuilding industry is ramping up,” Shikhov said.
