A new pushboat used to push barges convoys along the Paraguay River will be powered by a Wärtsilä integrated propulsion solution. The vessel is being built at the "Astillero la Barca del Pescador" (Shipyard SA) yard in Paraguay on behalf of Naviera Yeruti, a Paraguayan company with extensive barge construction and vessel operating interests. This vessel will be the company's first pushboat and it is scheduled to be delivered in the second quarter of 2015.

Two Ro-Ro ferries owned by UK based Condor Ferries are to be retrofitted with Wärtsilä's new AQUARIUS READY ballast water management system (BWMS) solution. The AQUARIUS READY concept has been developed by Wärtsilä to prepare vessels for the fitting of BWMS, while minimising vessel downtime, thereby enabling more efficient operations. The actual equipment installation and commissioning will take place at a time convenient to the owners following ratification of the IMO Convention.

Wärtsilä said its new inline scrubber system is designed to offer notable benefits over conventional exhaust gas cleaning systems, and its compact form saves considerable space, which is particularly important in smaller vessels and when being retrofitted, while the lower cost structure of the new design offers CAPEX advantages. With just one scrubber system per engine, installation is faster and easier, Wärtsilä said, which consequently reduces the out-of-service time for the vessel.

The new Wärtsilä slop water treatment system has been ordered for an ultra-deep water drill ship operating in the Gulf of Mexico, marking the first for Wärtsilä’s new system. The contract was signed in the end of 2013. The Wärtsilä slop water treatment system is designed to treat and clean water contaminated with slop or drilling mud. For operators, large volumes of slop mud result in enormous disposal expenses and represent a potentially significant environmental issue.

Siem Offshore has again contracted Wärtsilä to supply the design and integrated solutions for four new platform supply vessels (PSVs) to be built at the Remontowa Shipbuilding yard in Poland. The four new vessels, like the two currently under construction, will utilise the Wärtsilä VS 4411 DF ship design and will have Wärtsilä dual-fuel propulsion allowing them to operate primarily on liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Wärtsilä Pumps Chosen for North Sea FSU

Wärtsilä said it signed a contract in late 2013 for a range of pumping solutions for a new Floating Storage Unit (FSU) which will operate on the Mariner oilfield in the North Sea. Wärtsilä's contract was signed with Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) which will build the FSU in South Korea on behalf of Statoil, the Norway based international energy company. Delivery of the Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled for spring 2015, and the FSU is expected to be in operation in 2017.

While the improvement in global vessel contracting was significant, power generation markets declined for the second consecutive year. Unfavourable exchange rates and some delayed deliveries at the end of the year led to a slightly weaker than expected net sales development. Hydrex, Wärtsilä Partner for Subsea Repair

Last month a Hydrex diver/technician team carried out underwater stern tube seal repairs on a 110-meter offshore supply vessel in Bunbury, Australia. The rope guard covering the stern tube seal assembly was missing and the seal box had come loose after a mooring rope got tangled around the assembly. An emergency on-site repair was necessary. Hydrex therefore mobilized a diver/technician team to the vessel’s location and was able to carry out the entire operation on-site and underwater.
Wärtsilä to Shed 1,000 Staff in Global Efficiency Shake Up

The Group-wide efficiency programme is expected to lead to a reduction of approximately 1,000 employees globally, of which about 200 are planned to be in Finland, in a move to secure future profitability and competitiveness.
