WESMAR Thrusters ABS DP Approval
WESMAR announced that two more of their all stainless steel bow thrusters have been given ABS Certificate of Design Assessment for dynamic positioning (DP) applications. WESMAR Models V2-24 and V2-26 Vortex dual prop all stainless steel bow thrusters have joined the V2-20NS system, which received the design approval rating earlier this year. The horsepower ratings for the V2-24 and V2-26 range from 175 to 225, for operation on vessels up to 225 hp.
ABS Adds to Membership
At the recent ABS Council meeting in N.Y., 40 prominent members of the shipping and offshore industries were elected as new members of the international classification society.
ABS Elects Corporate Officers
The ABS Board of Directors has elected two senior executives of the classification society to the position of Corporate Officers. Mark A. McGrath currently serving in the appointed role of President and Chief Operating Officer of the ABS Pacific Division and Kenneth L. Richardson who serves as Vice President of Energy Project Development now join the society’s executive management team. Both are ABS veterans.

ABS to Class First Jackup Building in Mexico
A BS has been selected to class the first self elevating drilling rig built in Mexico. The rig is a Friede & Goldman JU2000 (E) design to be built by Operadora CICSA headquartered in Mexico City. The rig design is intended for all-year Central North Sea harsh-environment operation in up to 400 feet of water. According to ABS’ Country Manager for Mexico Paul DeLaire, the rig is being built in three locations: Guadalajara, Pueblo Viejo and Tuxpan.
Norway Recognizes ABS MODU Rules
The maritime authority of Norway, the Norwegian Maritime Directorate (NMD), has extended its authorization to class society ABS to include Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (MODUs) in its scope as a Recognized Organization (RO). This entitles ABS to class Norwegian-flagged rigs without having to perform additional safety equivalencies or a GAP analysis to meet Norwegian law. The additional annex to the existing agreement between NMD and ABS was signed the week of Feb.
