UNHCR: Boat carrying 45 refugees capssizes off the coast of Yemen

Posted to Maritime Reporter on July 25, 2024

The U.N. Refugee Agency in Yemen reported on Thursday that a boat carrying at least 45 refugees capsized on the coast of Yemen’s Taiz Wednesday night. There are only four survivors.

The agency said that the boat capsized due to strong winds and overloading. The agency said that it worked with the International Organization for Migration to provide assistance and protection for the survivors.

The rest of the refugees were not further identified.

At least 49 migrants were killed and 140 missing in June after a vessel carrying 260 migrants from Somalia capsized off the coast of Yemen.

IOM, a non-profit organization that keeps track of deaths or disappearances of migrants on migration routes, reported 1,860 deaths and disappearances of migrants along the route from East Africa, Horn of Africa, to Gulf Countries since 2014.

According to the United Nations 97,000 migrants from the Horn of Africa arrived in Yemen last year. (Reporting and editing by Miral Fakhmy; Maha El Dahan and Jana Choukeir)
