Two children die in Mediterranean shipwreck, 17 rescued, NGO says
The German NGO Sea Punks reported on Sunday that 17 migrants were rescued from a shipwreck off the coast of the Mediterranean while two children perished.
Sea Punks released a press release stating that the rescue occurred in the early morning hours of Sunday in the Maltese Search and Rescue area (SAR).
The Sea Punks medical team saved the life of one child by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on two others.
A Maltese helicopter rescued a woman who was pregnant and a man who had been seriously injured. An Italian coastguard vessel rescued the 15 other survivors, as well as the bodies of two children.
Sea Punks reported that survivors told rescuers the boat had 21 people on board when it left, but two were missing.
ANSA, the Italian news agency, reported earlier that 15 migrants were rescued, three of whom had died, and three more still remained missing.
