Posted to Maritime Reporter on September 10, 2024

In a tweet on Tuesday, the Senegalese Navy said that the death toll in a migrant ship accident off the coasts of Senegal had risen to 26, after 17 additional bodies were discovered.

Radio Television Senegalaise reported late Sunday that the boat, a narrow wooden fishing vessel called a pirogue, was carrying more than 100 migrants from Mbour. It capsized only after 4 km (2,5 miles) of travel.

On Monday, a spokesperson for the West African nation's armed services said that the navy sent two boats and a plane to search for survivors and the dead. (Reporting and editing by Anait Miridzhanian)
