Six Russian tourists drowned in a tourist submarine off the coast of Egypt

Posted to Maritime Reporter on March 27, 2025

The local governor's offices confirmed that six foreigners died when a tourist sub sank near the Red Sea resort of Hurghada in Egypt. However, they did not confirm the nationalities.

The Russian consulate at Hurghada confirmed that the "SINDBAD" submarine was carrying 45 Russian tourists in addition to its crew.

The consulate confirmed that four people were dead, but it did not say if any of them were Russian.

The consulate reported that "according to preliminary data, the majority of those aboard were rescued and transported to their hotels and Hurghada hospitals,"

The consulate said that the fate of several tourists is still unclear.

Local media reported the rescue teams saved 29 out of 45 passengers on the submarine.

Egypt's tourism sector, which is crucial to the economy, relies heavily on the Red Sea. It's renowned for its corals reefs, marine life and other natural wonders.

Four people were killed when a tourist vessel capsized in November off the coast of Egypt's Red Sea.
