Shark attack kills tourist in Egypt's Marsa Alam resort

Posted to Maritime Reporter on December 29, 2024

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Environment Ministry did not reveal the nationalities involved. However, it confirmed that one tourist had been killed and another injured by a shark in Egypt's Marsa Alam Resort.

Sharks are present in the Red Sea, but they are rare.

The ministry stated that the attack took place in deep water, outside of the designated swimming zones near the jetties located in northern Marsa Alam. They added that swimming away from the jetties is prohibited and they will be closing the jetties for two days starting Monday.

Marsa Alam, a coastal Egyptian town, is known for its corals reefs and marine life.

A tiger-shark killed a Russian in Hurghada in June 2023, a coastal city north of Marsa Alam on the Red Sea.

Four people were killed and seven others went missing after a tourist vessel capsized last month in the same region. (Reporting and editing by Sharon Singleton, Hugh Lawson and Hatem Maher)
