Nine crew members from capsized oil tanker near Oman are rescued; one is dead
Officials said that at least nine members of the crew of the Comoros flagged oil tanker, which capsized on Oman's coast on Monday, have been rescued, while another was found dead. This was announced on Wednesday, just two days after it was first reported.
The "Prestige Falcon", an oil tanker measuring 117 metres, capsized near Oman's main industrial port Duqm. It was carrying a crew of thirteen Indians and three Sri Lankans. The cause of the capsize was not immediately clear.
Search and rescue operations found 10 crewmembers of the oil tanker Prestige Falcon. Of those, nine were found alive. "Tragically, one crewmember was found dead," Oman's Maritime Security Centre announced on X.
The security centre stated that the search for the remaining crew is still ongoing. The centre did not provide any further information.
A spokesperson for the Indian Navy, which is assisting with search and recovery operations, confirmed that eight Indians and one Sri Lankan have been rescued.
The Indian navy spokesperson stated that the search and rescue operations by Indian and Omani assets are being conducted in difficult weather conditions due to the rough seas and strong winds.
Officials from the Indian government also confirmed that the search for remaining crew members will continue in the area.
Duqm Port, situated on Oman's south-west coast, is close to the country's major oil and natural gas mining projects.
