Iranian warship Sahand completely sinks despite efforts to rebalance
Nournews reported that the Iranian Navy frigate Sahand completely sank on Tuesday, in shallow water, in Bandar Abbas' southern port, after being briefly repositioned on Sunday, following its initial capsize.
The rope that held the Sahand warship together broke, and the vessel has now sunk. Nournews is a news agency associated with the Supreme National Security Council.
State media reported on Sunday that the ship capsized due to water intrusion during repairs at a wharf and that it was being rebalanced.
Local media reported that the Iranian-built stealth ship was launched for the first time in 2018. It is equipped with a flightdeck for helicopters, torpedoes, anti-aircraft, anti-ship, surface-to surface and surface-to air missiles, and electronic warfare capabilities.
Iran has built a huge domestic arms industry despite international sanctions and embargoes which have prevented it from importing many guns.
In 2010, it launched its first locally-made destroyer as part of its programme to upgrade its navy equipment which was mostly made in the United States and dates back before the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
The Iranian Navy Ship Kharg sank in 2021 after catching on fire during an training mission in the Gulf of Oman, without any casualties.
