IOM reports over 180 missing people after capsized boats off Yemen
The International Organisation for Migration reported that more than 180 migrants were missing and believed to be dead after the two boats in which they were traveling capsized on rough seas near Yemen, Thursday.
IOM reported that the boats, which were carrying migrants from an Horn of Africa nation, capsized near Yemen's Dhubab District in Ta'iz Governorate.
The boats sank despite weather warnings in rough seas. "Only two Yemeni crew were rescued. All passengers and crew are believed dead. No bodies have been recovered yet," IOM spokeswoman Tamim Elyan stated on Friday.
IOM said earlier on Friday in a posting on X, that four boats carrying migrants had capsized overnight off the coasts Yemen and Djibouti.
IOM, which keeps track of the number of migrants killed or missing along migration routes, reported in a blog post that last year 558 people died on the route connecting the Eastern Horn of Africa to Yemen.
The IOM describes the Eastern Route as one of the most dangerous and busy migration corridors in the world. It is also one of the busiest.
