Officials from India's government and navy, who have assisted in the search and rescue operation, confirmed that at least nine members of a 16-member crew aboard a Comoros flagged oil tanker capsized on Monday off Oman.

The "Prestige Falcon", an oil product tanker measuring 117 metres, capsized near Oman's main industrial port Duqm with 13 Indians and 3 Sri Lankans on board.

A spokesperson for the Indian Navy said that eight Indians, and one Sri Lankan were among those who have been recovered.

The spokesperson stated that the search and rescue operations by Indian and Omani assets are being conducted in difficult weather conditions, as the area is experiencing rough waves and strong winds.

The Indian government has confirmed that it will continue to search in the area for the rest of the crew.

Duqm Port, situated on Oman's south-west coast, is close to the country's major oil and natural gas mining projects.
