German woman killed by shark off Canary Islands
On Wednesday, a German woman was killed by a shark after being attacked while swimming alongside her catamaran between Spain's Canary Islands & West Africa.
The 30-year-old woman was traveling on a catamaran which had left Gran Canaria Island on September 14. Police said that a shark bit off a leg of the woman.
The helicopter took her to a hospital in the area 514 km (320 mi) south of Gran Canaria, but the woman died due to her injuries.
Although some shark species are large enough and aggressive to hunt animals as big as humans, shark attacks and deaths are rare all over the world. In 2023, the International Shark Attack File of Florida Museum of Natural History (ISAF), identified 14 shark-related deaths around the globe.
ISAF records only six shark-related incidents throughout Spain's history. (Reporting and editing by Natalia Siniawski; Editing by Inti landauro; Editing by Alex Richardson).
