Four dead after dredging vessel capsizes off Philippines, says coast guard

Posted to Maritime Reporter on April 17, 2025

The Philippine Coast Guard reported on Thursday that four people, including one Chinese national, were killed and seven are still missing after a 25-person dredging boat capsized in a province of western Philippines two days earlier.

PCG stated that the MV Hong Hai 16 had 2,000 litres lube oil on board and 30,000 litres diesel in its tanks when it capsized in waters near Occidental Mindoro on April 15. Containment efforts were underway to prevent a spillage of oil, according to a PCG statement.

The PCG reported that on Thursday, two more bodies were recovered by divers during search and rescue operations. This brings the total death toll up to four.

The PCG reported that six Filipinos, eight Chinese and 13 Chinese crewmembers were rescued. (Reporting and editing by John Mair; Karen Lema, reporting)
