High Tech Towboat: LNG-Powered Design Gets ABS Approval in Principle
Conrad Shipyard and The Shearer Group, Inc. (TSGI) said that its design of a 4,200 horsepower LNG-powered towboat received “Approval in Principle” (AIP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). The boat is based on TSGI’s azimuth drive (Z-drive) towboat design that debuted in 2008 as the FRANK T. STEGBAUER. To date, eight of these towboats have been built for Southern Towing Company, which is a pioneer in the use of z-drives for brown water operations.

It is not often that I break out the tux for my editorial picture, but this special edition dictates. I know that I should argue that all of our editions are special, but this one in particular, I must admit, stands out in a number of ways. In fact, all of 2014 has been somewhat ‘special,’ as the domestic maritime business has rebounded with a vigor, driven in no small part by an unprecedented energy boom in the U.S. that looks like it will make the country energy independent by 2020.

Emissions Scrubber Tech for Exmar LPG Carriers
Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction, Korea, is building a pair of new LPG carriers for Exmar, which is a Belgian energy logistics company with an existing LPG fleet of around 30 vessels. The two new 38,000-cu. m. LPG carriers will be built at Hanjin’s Subic Shipyard in the Philippines and delivered to EXMAR in Q1 and Q2 of 2016. Shipbuilding: Navigator Holdings Orders Two LPG Carriers
Navigator Holdings Ltd. (NYSE: NVGS) announced that it has ordered two 22,000 cubic meter semi-refrigerated liquefied gas carriers at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) in South Korea at a construction cost of $51 million each. U.S. Shipbuilding: ESG Nabs Two Z-Drive Tug Contracts
Eastern Shipbuilding (ESG) said that Suderman & Young Towing Company and Bay Houston Towing Company each exercised one additional Z-Drive Tug to be built at ESG. This brings the total to six of the new Robert Allan, Ltd. Z-Tech 2400 Class Terminal & Escort Tugs built at ESG's Panama City, FL facilities.
