GasLog Orders LNG Carrier Newbuild from Samsung
Ship owner GasLog Ltd. announced it has ordered another newbuild liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier from South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries, with options for additional newbuilds. The 180,000 cubic meter capacity Flex Plus vessel with XDF propulsion is the second LNG carrier ordered by GasLog this year. The two vessels are unchartered and scheduled to be delivered in the third quarter of 2019 and the second quarter of 2020 respectively.

Remains of Three Crew Found on Maersk Honam
Maersk said the remains of three of four missing crew members have been found aboard the Maersk Honam after a fire broke out in one of the vessel’s cargo holds last week. The search for the fourth crew member continues on board, though the search at sea has been suspended. “Given the time passed and the severe fire damages of the vessel we must conclude by now that we have lost all four colleagues who have been missing since the fire onboard Maersk Honam which began on March 6.

Third LNG-powered Ship Ordered for AIDA Cruises
The number of liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered ships on order for AIDA Cruises has risen to three following the latest shipbuilding contract announced today by the German cruise line’s parent company Carnival Corporation & plc. Carnival said it signed a shipbuilding contract with German shipbuilder Meyer Werft GmbH to build another new 180,000-ton ship that will be fully powered at sea and in port by LNG. The vessel will be built at Meyer Werft’s Papenburg shipyard for delivery in 2023.

Louisiana shipbuilder Bollinger Shipyards said it delivered the U.S. Coast Guard’s 27th Fast Response Cutter (FRC), U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Richard Snyder, on February 8, 2018 in Key West, Fla. The vessel’s commissioning is slated for April, 2018 in Atlantic Beach, N.C. Two more Japanese shipyards have formed a business alliance as the nation’s shipbuilders continue to struggle against an industry downturn. Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) and TSUNEISHI Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. say they will collaborate on commercial shipbuilding and design, becoming the latest in a string of Japanese shipbuilders to form similar partnerships in attempts to better compete with yards in China and South Korea.

A fire-stricken commercial fishing vessel that had been adrift in the Pacific for more than three months has run aground in the Samoan Islands on Monday. USCG Cutter Joseph Gerczak Arrives in Hawaii
The U.S. Coast Guard’s second of three new 154-foot fast response cutters (FRC) stationed in Hawaii arrived at its homeport of Honolulu on Sunday. The new cutter, Joseph Gerczak (WPC 1126), was built by Bollinger Shipyards in Louisiana and delivered the U.S. Coast Guard on November 9, 2017 in Key West, Fla. before transiting more than 8,400 miles to Hawaii. The vessel is slated to be commissioned on March 9.

Polaris Commences Icebreaking in Bothnian Bay
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered icebreaker Polaris has left its home base in Helsinki on Tuesday to become the third Finnish icebreaker active in this year’s icebreaking season. The nearly 110-meter-long Polaris is the world’s first LNG powered icebreaker, running on both LNG and marine diesel. The vessel will head to Tahkoluoto, Pori, to bunker LNG before joining fellow icebreakers Kontio and Otso which departed on December 18, 2017 and January 9 respectively.

Mississippi Towing Vessel Fire Extinguished
A large fire has been extinguished on board a push boat near Vicksburg, Miss., the U.S. Coast Guard said. The fire broke out in the engine room of uninspected towing vessel George King near mile marker 390 on the lower Mississippi River on Thursday morning. The nine crew on board were able to safely disembark, and no injuries or pollution have been reported. The Coast Guard said it is working with local agencies to continue monitoring the vessel.
