Five Weeks Later, Maersk Honam is Still Burning
Efforts to suppress a fire on containership Maersk Honam continue more than a month after a blaze aboard the 15,000 TEU vessel killed five crew members. On March 6, a fire broke out in a cargo hold aboard Singapore-flagged Maersk Honam while the vessel was en route from Singapore toward Suez, about 900 nautical miles southeast of Salalah, Oman. At the time of the incident, the ship was carrying 7,860 containers for the 2M Alliance between Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Co. (MSC).

USS Little Rock Arrives in Mayport

HMM to Order 20 Mega Containerships

Feringa Exits NORDEN’s Board of Directors
Team Tankers CEO, Hans Feringa, has resigned from the board of directors at Dampskibsselskabet NORDEN A/S following Team Tankers’ acquisition of a potential competitor to NORDEN’s tanker business. Team Tankers announced on Wednesday that it acquired Laurin Shipping AB and Anglo-Atlantic Steamship Company Ltd. “To avoid any conflicts of interest Hans Feringa has decided to resign from the Board at NORDEN,” said NORDEN’s board chairman, Klaus Nyborg.

Main Iron Works Building New Towboats for Kirby
Houma, La. shipbuilder Main Iron Works has secured contracts to build four inland push boats for Kirby Inland Marine. The four 2680 BHP twin propeller conventional towboats will measure 88’x35’x12’2” and will join Kirby’s inland towboat fleet for the transportation of a variety of petrochemicals, refined products, oils and liquid fertilizers. Work on the new vessels is already underway, with completion dates scheduled between August and December 2018.

New Icebreaking LNG Carrier Enters Service
A new icebreaking liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier jointly owned by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and China COSCO Shipping Corporation Limited (China COSCO Shipping) loaded its first cargo at the Yamal LNG plant in northern Russia. The 299m, 172,000m3 Vladimir Rusanov conducted it is first loading for Yamal LNG at Sabetta port on March 27 and 28. Cargo Ships Collide in Danish Great Belt
A containership and a bulk carrier were damaged in a collision in Denmark’s Great Belt early Tuesday morning. No injuries or pollution have been reported. The 178-meter containership Delphis Gdansk and 190-meter bulk carrier BBC Neptune collided around 4 a.m. while passing in opposite directions in the deepwater route Rute Tango of the Great Belt between Fyns Head and Kalundborg, Denmark. Danish authorities said they were alerted of the incident around 7:30 a.m.

World’s Largest Cruise Ship Delivered
At 362 meters long, 66 meters wide and 70 meters high, Royal Caribbean’s new 228,081 GRT cruise ship takes the “world’s largest” title. Capsized Cargo Ship Towed to Le Havre
The hull of capsized cargo ship Britannica Hav has been towed to the Port of Le Havre following a collision with a fishing vessel earlier this week in the English Channel. The 82-meter freighter arrived in port Thursday under the tow of rescue tug RIAS Abeille Liberté and several escort vessels. The Maltese flagged Britannica Hav capsized and overturned Tuesday after a collision with Belgian flagged fishing vessel Deborah about 50 nautical miles northeast of Cherbourg, France.

Port of Leixoes Orders Pilot Boat from Safehaven
Irish boat builder Safehaven Marine said it has signed contracts with the Port of Leixoes in Portugal to supply a 48-foot pilot boat due for delivery in 2019. Overturned Cargo Ship in Tow in the English Channel
The hull of an overturned cargo ship that collided with a fishing vessel is being towed out of the way of shipping lanes in the English Channel. The Maltese flagged cargo ship Britannica Hav capsized after it was involved in a collision Tuesday with Belgian flagged fishing vessel Deborah about 50 nautical miles northeast of Cherbourg, France. The freighter’s seven crew members evacuated the ship aboard two life rafts and were recovered by Deborah.

Containerships Collide at Port of Karachi
Authorities are working to retrieve more than 20 containers that fell into the water at Pakistan's southern port of Karachi on Monday following a collision between two containerships. Finnlines to Lengthen Two More Vessels
Finnlines has opted to lengthen two additional vessels as part of its €70 million ($86 million) Energy Efficiency and Emission Reduction Investment Program launched in 2017, the company said today. Another Maersk Containership Catches Fire
U.S. flagged containership Maersk Kensington reported a fire in a cargo hold while en route from Salalah, Oman toward Suez. The fire is the second reported aboard a Maersk vessel this month. The fire has been contained and all 26 crew members are reported safe and accounted for, according to A.P. Moller-Maersk. The vessel is carrying 3,518 containers (corresponding to 5,616 TEU) and is currently at anchor outside the port of Salalah where it is receiving assistance from shore.

First Steel Cut for Seven Seas Splendor
Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri held a steel cutting ceremony in Ancona marking the official start of construction on Seven Seas Splendor, a new ultra-luxury cruise ship for Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings brand Regent Seven Seas Cruises. The new vessel is scheduled to be delivered in early 2020, following Seven Seas Explorer delivered by the Fincantieri shipyard in Sestri Ponente, Genoa in June 2017.
