‘Super-sized’ Seaway Cargoes to U.S Ports
Economic conditions and severe weather conditions have formed the perfect storm to slow some traditional trade at U.S. ports along the St. Lawrence Seaway System. The St. Lawrence Seaway reported that year-to-date total cargo shipments for the period March 22 to July 31 was 17.1 million metric tons, virtually flat over the same period in 2011. While July is usually a slow month on the System, not all the news was negative.

China Shipyard Wins Grimaldi Five Ship Contract
Shangai's Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding contracted by Grimaldi Group to build 5 large RoRo container ships. The new generation of 3,800-teu Ro-Ro container ships will replace ACL's existing fleet of such types of ship operating in the company's transatlantic service and they will be the first of their type ever built. Ice-class Tugboat Launched in Archangel Shipyard
Laysky Shipyard in Archangel, Russia, launches the 'Iskander' tugboat for delivery to Ecotek-Bunker after sea trials. The new tugboat will transport barges laden with coal, firewood, construction materials to remote areas of the Arkhangelsk region: Mezen, Kamenka, Onega, and to the Nenets Autonomous District.
