Corvus ESS Chosen for Danish Ferry Newbuild
Danish shipyard Hvide Sande Shipyard, Steel & Service has selected Canadian-based Corvus Energy to supply the energy storage system (ESS) for a new fully electric ferry for Molslinjen, the largest domestic ferry company in Denmark.The new ferry, designed by JJohannesson Maritime Engineering and OSK-ShipTech, will be the second all-electric ferry in Denmark. Its 12-minute trip between Fanø and Esbjerg is very popular; last year the ferries in operation carried 1.8 million passengers in total.
Zvezda Cuts First Steel for Sovcomflot Aframax
Russia's Zvezda shipbuilding complex has starting building a new Aframax tanker for compatriot shipowner Sovcomflot.The vessel is the sixth tanker build underway at the newly opened shipyard and is one of 12 Aframaxes in the builder's order book. The ice class ICE-1A ships are 250 meters long, 44 meters wide and are equipped with the Class A automation system, and can run on liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel.Currently four Aframax tankers are under construction at the shipyard.
Stellar Banner to Be Scuttled Off Brazilian Coast
A 340-meter-long very large ore carrier (VLOC) that ran aground off the coast of Brazil earlier this year will be scuttled due to the extent of hull damage suffered as a result of the incident, Brazilian authorities said.The 300,660 dwt Stellar Banner, owned and operated by the South Korean company Polaris Shipping, ran aground while carrying iron ore bound for China from Vale's terminal in Maranhão in February.

Port of Long Beach Reports Cargo Increase
Cargo shipments rose at the Port of Long Beach in May as the economic effects of COVID-19 started to subside.Some 628,205 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of container cargo move through the port last month, a 9.5% increase from May 2019. Imports grew 7.6% to 312,590 TEUs, while exports climbed 11.6% to 134,556 TEUs.
